140 Miles to a Tank

140 Miles to a Tank
I've only been able to get around 140 miles to a full tank of gas in my 97 Bravada, or at least until the fuel gauge is on E. When looking at the trip computer, it informs me that I have used 10.3 gallons which calculates to 13.3 MPG (all city driving, though). My owner's manual tells me that I have a 19 (approx.) gallon fuel tank. Is it safe to say that the computer isn't lying and that I really have 8 gallons left in the tank which would increase my full tank mileage to around 250 miles (using the same MPG).
When I gas up from E, I can usually fill it up with 12.5 gallons MAX (after about three clicks of the pump).
This leads me to believe that the gauge is reading incorrect. How can I fix this? Do I have to replace the sending unit? If so, how? I'd hate to have to keep resetting the trip and then making sure I have enough gas to get somewhere...
Thanks,
Nick

I say your gas gauge is off. 12 gallons fills my tank from about the 1/4 tank mark.

GM gas gauges are junk!
I've been getting 14-15 MPG this winter.

Its the way the gauge was designed. A few years ago Gm offered a service that would come and bring you gas if you ran out. After a while they realized that it was costing them a lot to do this. so they changed all their gauges so you think you are on E but you still have plenty left. This way people dont run out of gas nearly as often.
