Default Fuel level sending unit flakey - is this common?

My 2002 Blazer LS 4x4 can't make up it's mind how much fuel is in the tank - but only when the fuel level is at/less than 1/8th of a tank. Below 1/8th it'll show anything from below empty to (what I think is) the actual fuel level.

Is this a common problem with Blazers? Google isn't turning up very much except "dead" sending units so I'm thinking it's not but, ya never know.

I'm just hoping I can access the sending unit through the cargo area like I do on my subaru wagon. Hate dropping fuel tanks!
