Default Hood release cable broken

Hi everyone
New to forum, so don't know if this was ever discussed or not.

Hood release broke on inside of 2000 Blazer 2WD. Lever is still attached, cable pulled out of little rod that attaches to latch.
1st question - How do I get the hood open? It's time for antifreeze in Chicago
2nd question - Can I replace the cable without replacing cable housing also?

Thanks for any possible solutions.

If I understand correctly, the cable is still under the dash....

If this is right, use a pair of needle nose pliers to grab hold of the cable and pull hard to open hood.

I have replaced a few of them in the past and for the life of me, I cannot remember what the cable looks like on the end under the hood. If it just gets clamped in, you could possibly string a new cable through the old sheath.

As far as how to get your hood open, I seem to remember this being discussed before. Many members have just fished around with a long screw driver through the grill. I had posted pictures from my old '00 Bravada way back when, but our last software upgrade wiped all of the attached images so they're gone.

If you do need to replace the entire cable, sheath and all, the best way to do it is with a fish-tape or rope on the hood latch end of the cable and then pull it through into the cab. Then attach the new cable to the fish-tape and thread it on back through.

It happened to 99 blazer once and I used a tool that I made to open the hood on my 92 Caddy. 12" long 3/16" round stock with a a 3/4" 90 degree bend at the end and about a 30 degree bend 3 inches from the 90. Just reach in and grab the latch. My wife saved me the trouble of replacing the cable by ramming into the rear end of a truck which must have broken the cable :-).

One thing to consider if the cable broke the housing is also worn. I would replace the whole thing. Something caused the cable to break. Go to a wrecking yard & get the whole thing.
