Default ignition help 1997 Gmc Jimmy

ok so i just bought a 1997 gmc jimmy the key goes in and out of ingnition but it will not turn the last click to lock and steering wheel will not lock either.
i can pull the key out and start it whenever without the keys so it kinda worries me somebody has done work in there before me they broke the plastic cover around the wheel transmission is good brake lights and everything all work perfict please help with this problem or where i should start to fix this.

Sounds like a lock cylinder problem, have to take it apart and check it out. 97 was known for problems with the ignition switch also. Might want to think about replacing it while you're in there.... just sayin'

Hook is right...it is the lock cylinder itself as I experienced the same with a 96 I had;wouldn't return to the lock position and I could start it without the key at all. If you are planning on keeping this unit then a new ignition switch would be advisable as well...

hey boys it is not a lock cylinder problem i just replaced and it does the exact same thing as it did before it is releasing sometimes now but only when i can get the wheel turned in the exact right position but those times are few and far between

There is a set of gears that have to be timed correctly to allow the steering wheel to lock at one end and the starter to engage at the other end. A clue here is if you can turn the switch past the start position when the starter engages. It's quite possible someone had the lock cylinder out and didn't get it timed correctly, maybe off one tooth on the gears.

so they key goes all the way back now but only when i play with the button on the shifter i have floor shifter in this model and you can hear it click i think from the neutral safety switch
