Default MAF corrosion fix

I have been poking around the forum for a bit and have been reading up on this Mass Air Flow Sensor cleaning that everyone swears by. I decided to tackle it last night as I had some free time. When I pull the MAF from the air tubes, disconnected her and got to work, I ran into something I had not seen mentioned here.
(Ok from here on out my naming of parts might not be "technical" as I am not "very good with mechanical things". Please bear with me.)
The metal that hugs the MAF guts (imagine a reverse colored oreo with the metal being the cookie part) is pitted and corroded on the inside. I do not know if this can cause/lead to any major problems, but I doubt it was put there by the factory...
My question is this: can I pull the MAF cookie again, remove the cream filling, and polish out the pitting/corrosion with a dremel brush, clean up the shavings, slap it back together, and re-install without deadline-ing my ride?
