i was under the truck yesterday and all the wiring seemed fine but my mechanic only changed one of the two vss so im gunna go ahead and change the other one on the transfer case.. but while i was under there i found a few things that didn't quite look right.
1. theres a big a$$ hole in the front of the trans that i think should have like a plug or something covering it because that will defenitly get filled up with mud and water

2.there is one plug that doesn't quite plug in all the way and clip, all the pins make contact but the plug doesn't clip.and the bottom of the female end of the plug looks melted also the male end of the plug kinda looks melted ..

what are these too plugs for?
they plug into this...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/76381431@N05/9412997512/http://www.flickr.com/photos/76381431@N05/9412997512/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/76381431@N05/,

which this is connected to the speedo cable.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/76381431@N05/9385017850/http://www.flickr.com/photos/76381431@N05/9385017850/ by http://www.flickr.com/people/76381431@N05/,

that top plug is plugged in as far as I can push it in but it doesn't clip into place and also where the top blue plug, plugs into, the bottom of the female end is melted and the bottom plug female end is cracked.. could this be causing any of my problems?

no speedo, no 4x4 lights, no 4x4, trans stuck in 2nd gear..

I need help fixing this..

That is the neutral safety switch. It tells the PCM what gear is selected, and will only allow the starter to engage when in neutral or park positions.

The hole in the bell housing: There should be a metal plug that snaps in covering the hole.... I see a trip to the boneyard in your future for it, pick up a neutral safety switch and the two connectors too. Do not use crimp connectors when replacing them. Use 60/40 lead/tin rosin core solder only, and some heat shrink tubing to insulate/weatherproof the connections.

Would the NSS cause the trans not shift? It has no problem staring up.. just won't shift out of 2nd and the speedo doesnt work.

You need to buy a new NSS and connectors. It’s not melted but what has happened is the glue they used inside the NSS had too low of a melting point and when it heats up it runs into the connectors. I'm surprised you were able to unplug it. In addition, you may want to swap the valve body, harness and control unit from your old trans into this one. The internals are the same. Good luck and eventually it will get to that Ah Hah moment and look at everything you will have learned!

Your problem right now is the VSS signal. Its critical. The NSS shouoldn't cause it not to shift. Have you checked the harness all the way up fror a pinched harness somewhere?

My first thought is some wires were broken in the loom during the swap. I did the same thing when I was in high school. PITA to track but probably worth the time. Get a DMM and a 5' jumper wire with alligator clips on it. Run the jumper through the engine compartment to the trans. Stick a pin or sewing needle into connector plug attach the jumper to it and test from up top.

Using a wiring diagram is pretty much a must, I would also disconnect the battery.

Second thought, and maybe too obvious to think of, but how sure are you the replacement trans is not also shot?

I checked the VSS harness up until about the front of the trans.. I did not check it all the way up to the pcm..

Does anyone know where I can find the wiring diagram I.need to test the VSS..

I am pretty sure the replacement trans is not shot because I was able to drive it through all the gears when my buddy had my truck hooked up to his snap on tech 2 scanner.. he was able to shift my trans for me though his scanner

If the Tech2 could shift the transmission, the harness from the VCM to the transmission, and the solenoids in the transmission, are good. In the VSS connector on the transmission there are two wires: purple with a white trace, and light green with a black trace. They run through a connector at the top right rear of the transmission. From there they run directly to connector #1 on the VCM. Purple wire goes to pin #30 and light green goes to pin #29. Unplug the VSS and the VCM connector and measure resistance of each wire, end to end must be less than 5 ohms.
