Problem while replacing cv axle
#11
I wasn't very observant when I took the cv off the first time. Now I went back out to look at it again and the shaft with splines on it is loose inside the tube. Also there are a bunch of little circular tubes of metal inside the axle tube, like from a bearing. I'm guessing there is a bearing inside there that supports that shaft and it is gone, causing it be sloppy???

I found this diagram while searching and its helped alot. There are only two bearings on here so it has to be #4 or 11, if it is a bearing at least...

That diagram doesn't have the labels for all the parts unfortunately. I'm really not sure what's going on in there at this point. It may be time to pull the diff and open it up and see what's going on.
Someone with experience on these things will chime in i'm sure.

Yea I'm gonna have to start disassembling. The axle shaft just pulls out of the housing doesn't it? If I can pull that out and then take the housing off the differential I should be able to take a look at the bearings on the axle at least....

I would pull the axle out, take the front propshaft off, unbolt the mounts, and take the whole differential out from under there, then you can dissasemble on a bench and see exactly what you're looking at and not have fluids dripping on you or parts dropping and getting lost etc.

when I pulled my Passenger side CV out , the Inner axle in the Diff dropped a bit too. Looking at how the seal is designed, I assumed this is normal. Replaced the Axle seal and slid the CV back in. The inner shaft lifted as the CV axle slid in on the seal. I assumed the CV axle is what rides on that bearing, not the inner axle.
I hope I'm right or I will be yanking the CV and seal again

Looking at the Picture you posted, it looks like it will Pull out after the seal is in the way BUT the Stub Axle will make it hard to get a puller in there. Mine was intact so I didn't touch it.
As I mentioned, I am assuming that Bear rides on the CV shaft as the shaft goes in past the seal
OK the outer Seal has an Inner Diameter of 1.5" the Bearing has an Inner diameter of 1.57" so that tells me that the Stub axle will drop a bit after sliding teh CV axle out. AND that it's the CV axle that rides on that inner Bearing after it gets past the seal.

Alright thats what I'm gonna try tonight is pulling that seal and seeing what happens. Thanks for your help man.

Finally got the seal off today. It was difficult with no slide hammer but now I'm having trouble getting the bearing out. I havn't taken the splined shaft out and I have no bearing pullers. Is there any way to do this without taking that shaft out and renting a small puller from autozone??
BTW I apologize for dragging this thread out for so long, but as you can tell this is my first time messing with this kind of stuff
