Remove steering wheel or not?

Default Remove steering wheel or not?

Getting ready to replace the ignition switch. Found a few proceedures on doing this. Question I have is some say remove steering wheel, some don't mention removing it at all. Could someone please clear this up for me? Is it necessary or not, Thanks.

The sound insulator and knee bolster along with both of the column covers need to be removed. Removing the steering wheel makes it a little easier to see what you're doing, but it's not necessary. If you do remove it, be very careful of the clock spring, it is expensive. When the wheel is removed, DO NOT turn the steering shaft.

Where is or please discribe the the sound insulator and knee bolster.

Sound insulator is black plastic panel above brake pedal, (has the OBDII connector attached to it). Knee bolster is the panel just below the steering column.

Ok thanks. Have you ever had to replace the ignition switch in a 97? If so, any tips would be appreciated, Thanks.
