Recently took a trip in my Blazer on I-95. I usually don't speed on that particular stretch of hwy b/c the state trooper really work it.
I got on the highway and the traffic was fairly light so I didn't have much trouble merging. I was running in the flow of traffic at about 70mph. I got halfway to my destination when a Kia Spectra changed lanes and struck an Isuzu Rodeo. I though I was in trouble then. The Spectra spun off into the inside lane (airbags deployed)and I locked em up. I could hear my ABS barking and I took the outside and missed her. Then the Isuzu was my problem, the impact blew out his left rear and he was fighting to regain control. I took the emergency lane off to the side and came to a stop, and so did the Isuzu. I reached for my phone and no quicker than I had dialed 911 a Trooper stopped behind me. I got out of my car and check on the guy in the Isuzu, he and his daughter were ok, the trooper ran across the highway and checked on the woman in the Kia. She was shaken and had a nosebleed from the force of the airbag. I checked with the trooper (he called for EMS) and Igave him a description of the incident. The trooper wrote the ticket and the collision report while I helped thedaughter of the Isuzu guychange the tire(he didn't know how to change a tire). I left shortly after that, but before I left I got the phone number of the girl in the Kia (she was hot LOL).

Have any of you guys seen a collision happen?

I've witnessed more than a fair share of accidents on the highway. Most often caused by careless drivers, but quite a few that just happened.

One that comes to mind is when I had a semi truck I was along side of blow out 3 of the 4 tires on the drivers side of the drive axles. He must have run something over earlier in the day because I literally watched all three expell their casings at the same time! I was the lucky one and ended up ahead of the scene. One car behind the semi had one of the chunks of tread slapped into the windshield, breaking it, but not going through. The chain reaction after that ended up with 6 vehicles involved, one of which rear ended the semi causing quite a bit of damage to both the trailer and the pickup truck. The other vehicles involved were only minor damage from the chunks of tire that hit their cars. Still, most of them had busted headlights because of it.

I am a volunteer firefighter and have been for awhile now. As such, I have cleaned up a lot of accidents as well. There have been some more memorable ones there too.

The problem with the big semi-tractor trailers is that the tires they use are retreaded. It's a lot cheaper to retread those tires than to buy new ones. So when the tread flies off the tire, its extremely dangerous. I always see the retreads on the shoulder of I-95 left by the big trucks.

04-23-2007, 04:18 PM
Not all tractor trailer tires used are retreads. Quite a few trucking companies in my area have stopped using retreads for the simple fact that it isn't a matter of if, but rather when the tread will separate. And any tire can just give up its tread if improperly maintained, even more so with the design of heavily loaded tires. But to have 3 tires go all at the same time... Well, that's either lack of maintenance or something happened to them.

I bet one went out and puctured the other two or maybe he had run over something. Ive seen two,the on I mentioned and Ive seen a car de-roofed when itrun under a semi. This was the older style trailer that didn't have the rails under the sides. The littleCorolla went under it and come out without a roof. Luckily the driver was short enough to avod beheadding and the passenger had the sense to duck and no one was hurt.

I really though I was screwed when that Kia went sideways though... Nearly wet myself.

Most recent I've seen was a blazer getting t-boned by a cavy and it flipped the blazer on its side. Crazy sh*t.

I saw a blazer on the side of I-84 this morning onmy way to work with the drivers side axle snapped and the tire was on a 45 degree angle. On the other side of the highway, on my way home, I saw a pickup with a whole wheel assembly missing and I saw it about 15 feet down the road. People drive like maniacs, talking on the cell phones, woman putting on makeup, I've even seen two people having an argument in sign language on the highway. Let's just say I satyed clear of them lol.

Had a good scare last nite. Let's just say the intersection at the end of our road has a high accident rate. Ok now we sitting there waiting on a red light and we were the first car in line, I hear a horn then screeching tires then all of a sudden SMASH. there was a minivan trying to turn down our street and was T-Boned in the passenger side, the minivan's rearend was coming around straight at us, so I told everyone to hangon put it in reverse only to realize that there was someone there within about a foot or two so in Park it went. we waited for what seemed an eternity. The Minivan came to a stop literally within an inch of the front end of my truck. Heart felt like it jump out of my chest.

The only collision I've been in was at Topsail Beach in Onslow Co. NC. I was driving my dad home from the beach in his96Z71(he had a few beers), and a car in front of us slammed on brakes (without a signal) and so did I. I heard tires squeeling behind us and I moved up a few feet to keep from getting hit, but to no avail. The truck behind us slammed into our trailer hitch. We pulled off at the next street and the truck that rearended us (happened to be a brand new Silverado) was the worse for wear. The truck had a destroyed front bumper and a puctured radiator, the only damage we had was a bent ball on the hitch and a broken exhaust hanger. The woman driving said she would handle the damage to her truck herself and didn't want us to call the police (suspected she had an arrestwarrant). We left and told my mom that we had been in a wreckand she freaked out, demanding to see the truck. She went outside and said, where did you get hit at? We explained about the collision and she calmed down a bit. two weeks later we got a check in the mail from the woman for the hitch, and to this day we don't know how she got our address...

One accident I saw, the guy was talking on the cell phone, ran a red light, t-boned a taurus with a 1 ton chevy pickup... car was a write off, nobody got hurt...

Me and my friends were the only male witnesses, and the 3 women who witnessed it, said the guy was going at least 80km/h (speed limit is 50km/h).
And oooooohhhhh my god did I ever get the look of death when I told the officer I was doing 45km/h and catching up to the guy!

Funny you mention retreads, I ran over one on the way home from school. When Iran it over( no room to swerve),it flew up and busted the lower valance on a black Ford Cougar behind me(one of my classmates). I was pissed. I stopped and looked at her (owner of the Cougar) valance and I told her she had some pretty bad damage. When I went to get back in my Blazer I noticed that my front tire was slack, I drove it home (only 3 miles) and checked the pressure. I had 15psi, and I usually run 38psi. I checked it for leaks, no go, couldn't find one. Pumped it back up and I hope it doesn't go flat again.

Must have, but it made one horrible noise when I ran over it, I checked my chassis this morning and I can see where it slapped the paint off the frame. No biggy for me, Im getting new tires soon.

Well I watched a guy in a '92 Silverado fall asleep on a long stretch of highway right in front of me and drift off the road into a ditch and flip 8 times. The truck landed upright with the passenger side of the roof completely flattened sparing his head by inches. Pulled over and ran over there and turned his ignition key off as it was billowing smoke. He was bloody and unconscious but alive and there was a marines sticker on the remaining corner of the windshield that was like a pass to get into the base. It took about 20 minutes for the ambulance to arrive way out there but when they did and had loaded him in it they let me know that they thought he would survive. There were pieces of that truck for easily half a mile.

The two worst ive seen were cars that flipped on the freeway. First one was on I-80, i think, traveling through Iowa. There was a 350Z that bounced off a Maxima and hit the center median and flipped over into oncoming traffic and landed on it roof. Luckily traffic was kinda lighter so the nearest vehicle was a semi and he purposely jack-knifed his rig to block all 4 lanes to stop traffic. Guy in the 350Z got airlifted out and ended up in critcal condition for a couple days but i heard that he made a recovery.

Other bad one i saw was a F150 that just randomly swerved into a ditch off the Loop 101 in Phoenix and nose dived the truck into a light pole causing the truck to bounce and flip a couple times.News said the guy died on impact with the pole. Agirl that i know who was best bud's with the guy (i didn't know the guy) said he wasnt right in the head and was somewhat suicidal and that might have explained it.

RCars2, I've seen the aftermath of accidents like that. We were on the way to Lake Mattamuskeet and we saw the carcass of a Maximathat had punched throught the cable divider in the median and flipped into a thankfully emptyeastbound lane. The guy was just sitting on the stretcherbehind the ambulancewith a expression on his face appropriate for boredom.

I've also seen what happens when a car hits the water at 70mph... (this was actually another Maxima driven by two ragheads.) the driver fell asleep and went perfectly in between the guard rails of the bridge over Holts pond. Rolled the hood back and busted the windsheild.

My buddy was careflighted out (costs $5,000 for the trip by the way) and was only in the hospital for like 2 days. The sucky thing about it was that I know a guy through my church who is a part time EMT and he was actually called to the scene, he went immediately back to the church and got a group of people to help pray, he called me, and then I got to break the news to his mother because she wasn't even informed yet (a good 3-5 hourse later). Then when I left to go visit I saw a trooper pull onto his street but they were long gone!

Saw one where a semi driver had fallen asleep and hit a concrete divider. The truck went airborne and rotated, landing on its side on a little Miata. A guy and his girlfriend were in the car, he had pushed her down and covered her as best he could. He died from the semi side mirror impaling him, she lived but it took a while to get her out. I was a few cars behind the Miata and saw the whole thing on my way to work, I was the only Law Enforcement or Military around for 30 minutes until the police arrived, so everyone was asking me what to do, I was still in shock from watching it.

I've seen a few nasty ones, too. Usually just the aftermath, though. The worst I've ever seen I think was a car-b-q...ever seen one of those? Traffic backed up for miles and miles and some kind of vehicle in flames. Heard the people got out but forgot to take their baby out of the car seat before the carwas engulfedflames, how terrible is that? If something like that happened I tell you I'd die trying to get my baby out of the car!

Another one we had on I-40 was a truck dumped over a trailer full of cows on the way to the slaughterhouse. Those cows got slaughtered that day, I'll tell ya that. What a disgusting mess that was!

I was surprised... I was driving down 30 west yesterday (from Lancaster to York) on my way to Baltimore for the O's game... I thought for sure we'd hit construction cause it seems they only do it during rush hour... but there wasn't any...

when I went to college in Williamsport, 15 was under construction for 4 straight years... it seemed like they just moved the caution barrels from one part to another every week...

ive went though an intersection slamming into a work truck that the driver was looking at a map instead of paying attention to driving. both totals
ive been tboned at an angle where there was no body damage to my truck except a bent rim and it tore the entire front end off the other car. get this the police arrices onsite the guy states it was his fault then claims to insurance that it was my fault i win of course because the police report said he agreed that he was at fault.
ive actually never seen a wrsck in person that i wasnt in sadly enough.

That must be a Maxima issue, because that's exactly what happened to my '98 Maxima when it was totalled last year! The hood folded back and smashed the windshield. If it wasn't for the seatbelts and airbags, my wife (girlfriend at the time) and I would have been decapitated.

Details of the accident: I was driving northbound on I-97 (the Baltimore-Annapolis Freeway), and this fool of a construction worker swings a U from the opposite side. Instead of gradually merging into the oncoming traffic (fast lane, I might add), he just pulled straight in, right in front of me! As soon as I saw him coming out, I knew there was no avoiding it. My first instinct was to make a quick lane change, but I couldn't, because there were other cars in the right lane. I had to take the lesser hit, which was to rear-end him. It was ruled his fault, because he did not yield. Even though he was on duty, we couldn't sue the state because he was driving his own personal vehicle -- a brand new Nissan Titan that was totally demolished. However, there's still justice, 'cause he ended up paying for our honeymoon! :D

And I've driven through that site also -- on my way from Baltimore to Syracuse! It really is a small world...

As for accidents I've witnessed:
When I was a junior in high school, I was riding on the school bus, and one of my classmates had just gotten a brand new red sports car from his daddy. He was showing off in front of the kids on the bus. On a two-lane, winding road, he passed us at about 60mph (speed limit 35), proceeded to lose control, and crashed out right in front of us! What an idiot! Last month, I was driving on the inner loop of the Baltimore beltway, I-695. On the opposite side, I saw a lady careening into the jersey wall. I pulled over and jumped out to help. Somebody had run her right off the highway, causing her car to slam head-on into the concrete barrier (which fortunately prevented her from going straight into oncoming traffic). She only suffered a broken arm, but she was in a lot of pain. I don't even know if they caught the person who caused the accident, because he or she never stopped.I've witnessed a few others, but I can't think of them now. Maybe I'll edit when I remember 'em...

Dayummm....but would you believe I'm considering buying another one? I want the 3.5 so bad. The last one was the 3.0. Those cars are really trickable.

Thegr81 -- you should have bought an Infiniti G35 instead, because it uses the same engine but on a RWD platform -- and it's already tweaked at the factory, making 298 hp. For the money you spent doing the work yourself, you may have come out ahead.

I used to have a '97 Grand Am GT also, which was pretty quick, but the Maxima was faster. I wanted to upgrade to a Grand Prix, but the bastards at GM don't offer a stick shift at all. It makes no sense, and that's why I went Japanese.

So what didn't you like about Nissan's transmission? Trust me -- there's a big difference between an Altima and a G35. I've test driven a couple of G35's with the six-speed, and they FLEW! Maybe I should test drive a G35 and then a GXP right after, to compare.

You can get an LS4 in a Grand Prix now?? It still begs the question -- if you can get a stick in a GTO, then why can't you get one in a GXP? (Come to think of it, maybe it's possible to steal a manny out of a GTO and put it in a GXP. I wonder if anybody's done that...)

But okay, I think we're digressing from the thread topic. Maybe we can continue this conversation in the Lounge.

I was in a accident, I had a 97 pontiac boneville, it was january 18th roughly 1:30 pm to be exact an it was a snowy day about 3 in. on the ground an the rouad i was on had not been plowed, well i saw a pickup coming so i got as far over as i dared, to make as much space between me an the pickup as possible. Well need less to say i got to far over, my right rear tire dropped of the road on to the shoulder( about a 2 in drop from road to shoulder) i corected but overcorrected so now i was fishtailing. Once a front wheel drive car starts to fishtail there aint much you can do. well i was running perpendicular with the road with the pickup coming right toawards me, he swerved to the right to miss me. I hit his driver side rear, with my front, both airbags deployed. NO injurys i had pain in my chest for a couple of days afterwards. There was no tickets, it was just the weather. And thats how i ended up with a blazer. My car ended up being totalled, but the guys pickup just had some axle damage, but they had quite the vocabulary. Lots of f in heimers lol but i guess i did hit them. thats my story.

Steer into the skid and hammer on the throttle.

Or e-brake to spin the arse end out of the way faster.

I drove a Maxima last night... One of the older ones, and the rear end is uber light... Like going around a corner, on gravel, or snow/ice, I could go faster in my Blazer, while ON the throttle, and accelerating... And the Blazer is less likely to spin out, lol.

Steer into the skid and hammer on the throttle.

Or e-brake to spin the arse end out of the way faster.

It didnt have a fun stick, it had a pedal.

Just needed to swing out of the way :)

Time for parking lot practice sessions! :D

If there's still enough snow for you to do it, lol... we've got practically none here...

I wish I had thought of that when the Grand Am was totalled. I think that was before I started playing Grand Theft Auto. LOL

This past winter while driving North on I69 (the roads were clear, or at least appeared to be) traffic was moving nicely at about 70-75 mph when we hit black ice. Apparently the mini van that was in front of the semi I was following slowed down a lot faster than the semi. What I saw was the semi hit his brakes and almost jack knife and what appeared to be an explosion of plastic and metal come out the sides, then I see a minivan beingcrushed into the guardrail between it and the semi....Believe me, it's not a good feeling when you see a semigo almost sideways right in front of you when you're on ice. I stopped and checked on the driver of the (totalled) van and he was very shaken but ok. After that I saw three more accidents (already happened didn't actually witness) in the next 1-1/2 miles.

It wasn't a super huge collision, but i was sitting in traffic, and some guy pulled came out of burger king into the left turn lane, and on the oppisite side of the street a van came out of nowhere turning out of riteaid, and the van smashed the side of the car that came out of BK. His car was badly damaged from that impact. It was two cars in front of me.

The most horrific one i saw had to be when a Ford ranger went between the bridges on the highway, only to land through the side of a Plymouth Caravan, which killed the lady in the backseat. The guy had fallen asleep at the wheel after too many alcoholic beverages, senseless really. When i saw that truck fly through there i locked em' up and pulled off into the median to see if there was anything i might be able to do, and all i saw was the lady's daughter in the front seat get out and start screaming horribly. Not a good time dudes. I still get a lump in my throat thinking about it.

Haha I've Totaled two truck, my 1993 Chevy 2500 plowing, and my 2003 Dodge ram 2500 reg cab on 495 NB 50 MPH into the medien hitting a ditch and four trees. No airbags went off, never even leaked any fliud out of truck. and walked away with out even a scratch..
Wrecked my old 2004 Grand Am, Smashed up my Ex gf's parents car, A Tribute.
I was also wondering, i saw that someone posted that they smashed up there 97 Bonneville. It is funny because my brother just bought a 97 Bonneville that was reconstructed from a major front end hit. It was from MA.
I watched a girl one time last winter pass me and my friends in the left lane or rt 2 in MA near sears town mall in Leominster. She was driving a newer corrola, passed us, and some how lost it. She perfectly perpendicular to it t-bones the guardrail on the right hand side. Of coarse the snow had been banked up against it, she hit it, went off of it like a jump, rolled the car in the air twice, landed it on all fours in the right hand lane, and kept driving. about 40 ft down the road she put her directional on and pulled over into the breakdown lane. I swear the only reason why she stopped was because the accident blew out a tire. she was clueless to the fact she crashed, and even more clueless to the fact that she had rolled over. We had stopped behind her to check on her. The car was a loss, drivers side was crushed in and nose was banged up, i don't remember the airbags going off though?

ok so this happened yesterday. I was stopped at a red light, lighting my cigarette when i felt a bump and my tuck moved. the guy behind me was apparently asleep and idled into me. I pulled over into the McDonalds parking lot to see the damage, as im making the turn i see a sweet hole in his bumper and radiator fluid leaking everywhere. He guns it and I notice written in big letter on his back windshield "JUST MARRIED". i pull into a parking spot and all i had was some paint on the ball of my hitch. i almost felt bad for him...."Honey im home...oh i destroyed the bumper and fu(ked up the radiator...love you"
