View Full Version : Secret Compartment in 1996 Blazer
sickrat 05-02-2007, 08:04 PM Hello,
I just recently got a 1996 Blazer LS, I would like to know if anybody knows any good hiding spot's for valuables and stuff like that. Or... Does anybody know a good place where I can make a secret compartment, that will be easy to access?
Thanks!!!!
TripleBlackBlazer 05-02-2007, 08:12 PM Although I feel like I'm condoning illegal activities by suggesting this, I will say it anyway...
...I was just detailing the inside of my truck (2000) and found that the center console (main compartment) has a drop-in compartment. If you pull it out there's some space under there. I was actually thinking of storing some cash (away from the Wife's spendy hands) there. I'm not sure if the the 96 and 00 are the same though...
Just beware that if it IS for illegal purposes, I don't think it's airtight and therefore still susceptible to curious minds/noses.
sickrat 05-02-2007, 08:31 PM Yes, I know of that spot.
To be honest with you it is to store my deck face piece so I dont have to bring it inside every night because I usually forget to bring it back out...
viper4559 05-02-2007, 10:48 PM Just put it in the glove box or maybe even right underneath your seat. As long as it is out of site, it will normally be assumed that it is not in the vehicle.
sickrat 05-02-2007, 11:25 PM Yes, thats true. They found it last time.. so this time I am trying to be a little more careful... But I am probly just going to leave it in the house because I live in a apartment complex. So if my alarm goes off... I wont know until they are half way down the block becuase I wont hear it that good, big parking lot... Unless I find a better spot. I think under the center console drop box is good though.
If anybody has any other suggestions, please let me know.
THANKS!!!!
rabbit0102030 05-03-2007, 07:17 AM If you open the glove compartment, you will notice that the only thing that holds it in place is the bottom hinges and at the top a strong metal clip that can be bypassed. You can push down the rubber piece that catches against the clip to hold the door in place when it is open, and pull down on the door and it will swing all the way down to the floorboard. There is an area behind the compartment that is big enough to hold abundle of cash, radio face plate, and personal protection items.
Dabber 05-03-2007, 08:03 AM HaHa Rabbit I thought I was the only one that would have thought about behind the Glovebox. I have a (tray) that sits in the center console I Stole it from my Extreme when I traded it in So I Have the deep on in there and the shallow one in that, open the lid and the only one you see it the shallow one. Better half doesn't know about either hidding spot.:D
EuroGoldLS 05-03-2007, 02:36 PM You can put it in the jack storage panel, or if you keep your back seats folded down, lift up the flap and stick it under there.
Also, the small panel between the vent and the dash bezel that can be popped out and you can put small things in there.
viper4559 05-03-2007, 10:54 PM Behind the glove box would be a great idea for ya. but correct me if I am wrong, I have a 2000 but I would assume it is the same as a 96. Rabbit said push down on the rubber stopper, well that wont do any good (unless I am missing a rubber stopper) I have a metal tab that stops the glove box from coming out all the way and I have to push up on that to flip it out. the only problem with that is if you have stuff in the glove box it wont stay there for long lol.
You could always get a 2 way alarm, that way you know when it is going off. I have a Crimestopper and I love it. All my wiring and control modules are behind the glove box as well :-)
sickrat 05-04-2007, 01:15 AM yes in my blazer (1996) ... my glove box is different. i have one that stays stationary, and only the door swings down, not the compartment.

Yeah, the metal clip as I mentioned can be bypassed, it rests against a piece of rubber (which is there to keep the metal from scratching up the plastic) that can be flexed to slide over the metal clip releasing the compartment. If your missing the rubber stopper then just push up on the clip.
EuroGoldLS 05-04-2007, 09:40 AM Here is the metal clip:

Just push the metal clip up:

and the glove box will completely fold out:

Just make sure you don't have any thing in the glove compartment like I did, see the white stuff on my floormat. That was a spray bottle of air freshener.
rabbit0102030 05-04-2007, 09:50 AM Exactly. The rubber piece is right there in plain view too. You can push the metal clip up or push the rubber piece down, whatever works easier for you. I found pushing the rubber piece easier because my clip is very hard to move, possibly on to tight or something. Thanks for the demo Euro!
EuroGoldLS 05-04-2007, 10:02 AM No prob. I sent it to sickrat last night because he couldn't find what you were talking about but it turns out that his glove compartment is different anyway.
sickrat 05-04-2007, 11:14 AM yes mine is different. i wish my glove box was like everyone elses becuase that is a perfect spot!!!!
thanks for helping me everyone!
Bigtan 02-06-2008, 05:57 PM I use under the center consol. It pulls out and there is alot of space down there. Also, at the end of your light assembly with the garage opener and everything, you can pull it down and stash some cash in there, no one would ever know that one.
theonetrueapex 02-06-2008, 06:29 PM Good idea with the behind the glovebox trick. I had the iPod cable from my iPod deck ran into the glove box, but now I can hide the iPod behind it. Thanks!
Tippman7641 02-06-2008, 07:00 PM well it tworks on mine, in the drivers side, you can somethings easily pull all of the window and mirror controls up, and you have a decent size spot ethere
EuroGoldLS 02-06-2008, 07:21 PM OLD POST!!! Brings back memories...
ratical12001 02-06-2008, 09:57 PM i think up top where i keep my sunglasses works good for my face plate. in the rear under the jack cover i peep my jumper cables and pull ropes
WhiteTie BlackJacket 02-07-2008, 08:20 PM Wow this is old...but someone mentioned their ipod. I took the tray out of my ashtray and reached up through and pulled the cable down into it, now no one sees my ipod laying out, and its more convenient that the glove box to take out.

Yep I do the same thing, plus I am going to run my charging cable through there and hardwire that in.
When I dont have my radar detector out and on, I hide it up in the sunglasses storage compartment in the overhead console.
thegr81 02-08-2008, 08:56 PM I use under the drop in for the center console also I use the compartment for the jack as well!!!

those two open up to the same spot. the center console armrest lifts up, theres a shallow tray sitting on top of a deeper tray. if you pull both out, you can reach all the way down to the carpet. also, the coin holder and cd holder can both pop out into the same spot. but it is a very nice spot, after 3yrs of driving him around, my lil bro just realized you can pull out the shallow tray
that dome light is also a really good idea. i have all my lights taken out anyway (except for the map lights)
ltown21 02-09-2008, 01:19 AM I've found a few... my drivers side window buttons lift up and you could stash something there. when you take the small tray our of the center console, you can also take the big one out with a little effort, which reviels carpet and is a nifty spot for a faceplate and such. Another, after breaking off one of the tabs for the cassette player trim piece reviels a small spot and you can push the clips and pull the player out and theres okenty of space under there. just some I've found when installing my deck and cleaning
