I don't know how much time I'm going to have to work on this, but I have started the process! My Chevelle is now out of the barn and just waiting for my dad to get the backhoe out of the shop. I'll be taking up a small corner of his 40x60 shop for the next few years! LMAO!!

Here it is! Rough, raw, and hasn't seen the light of day in over 10 years!!

Gotta like it. I like the early ones a little more, till 67. My brother had one like yours, either 70 or 71 can't remember with a 307 though. Still was a nice car.

You can tell a '70 from a '71 or '72 very easily... The '70 was the only year in that body style with the quad headlights. In '71 they went to the one headlight per side with the turn signals mounted to the outside of them at the corner.

Yeah I'm 99% sure it was a 70, but they haven't had it for a while now. Then were the 72's with 2 piece markers? I remember something like that to tell the difference between the 71s and 72.

The '71 and '72 marker lenses and grill were interchangeable. I do believe that the '71 marker lights, while being 1 piece, were split with a horizontal bar separating the lower and upper sections, matching the grill which also had 1 horizontal bar splitting the upper & lower sections much the same as the '70 grill.

In '72, the grill lost the splitter making it more monotonous, IMHO...

When I'm done with it, this thing won't be going anywhere near a fire scene!! LMAO!

I'm not going to keep it red anyway. I'm planning on a nice heavy metallic dark blue with probably black stripes. I don't want it to stick out, but I still want it to be recognizable.

Great Kyle, keep us posted on it. I'll have to take some pictures of my dad's 67 RS/SS Camaro when we are finished restoring it. I'll also have to take some pictures of my uncle's 69 SS 396 Chevelle.

Looks like it should be a good project. Are the plans to restore it to original conditon or change it some? How long do you think it will take?

Mostly stick to original for now. Plans are to do it a cheap as possible but make sure that everything that is done is going to last for a very long time.

So the frame will be removed and sand blasted & smoothed. Stainless brake/fuel lines, rebuild the suspension with poly-graphite bushings in stock components. Convert the front from the drums it is now to factory disk to keep the cost down, but help it stop better.

The engine will just get a refresh. I will be finding a 700R4 to rebuild and use as I already need a new driveshaft. I'm going to stick with the stock 10 bolt diff in the rear but fill it with an E-locker and swap out the 3.08 gears for some 3.73s. I'm still undecided as to if I'm keeping the stock control arms for the rear axle. With the ladder bars that I have on the car already, the control arms really don't play as big a roll. The ladder bars really help this car to hook, but I'm not sure if I can keep them and install a rear sway bar.

Interior will basically be going back to stock. I'd love to find a set of early '90's Taurus SHO seats to put in the front simply because they are the most comfortable seats I have ever sat in. One large problem is that these seats would not allow for proper access to the rear seat. For right now I'll probably just get factory buckets for the front and do it up in reproduction vinyl again. Again, in an effort to keep it as cheap as possible to get back to new or like-new components.

My ultimate goal is to have a fuel injected 350 running twin turbos just to be different. At that point, I'll need to revise the whole drivetrain to be able to handle the mill. I'll be looking for HP in the 600-700 range with torque above 600ftlbs out of a lowly smallblock!!

*EDIT* - UPDATE!!
Well, it is simply amazing what a wash will do. Most of the pics still have water on the surfaces, but with some polish and wax, the finish would come right back. This is a single stage paint that has been sitting for 10 years!

10 more pictures added to the album. Tomorrow will have even more! I hope to have the front clip, doors, and trunk all off tomorrow!!

swartlkk

The disassembly is the quick part... I don't have to spend any money! It's once I get into cutting off rusted metal and sourcing the replacement parts that I may not be able to work as quickly as I want to. This weekend will probably be the removal of the engine/transmission, but I think I may work at disassembling the dash to get a better picture of what it looks like on the inside of the firewall. Once I'm down to sheetmetal inside, out comes the power washer to get everything as clean as possible.

I found some replacement cowl sides from Original Parts Group (http://www.opgi.com/) for $55 (http://www.opgi.com/product.asp?topcatid=24&chapterid=772&topvalue=0&n ewflag=0&grpcode=36495&yearrange=) each so that should make things easier. I have to call them first and verify what exactly it is they're selling, but from the description I think it is everything that I need. The Paddock (http://www.paddockparts.com/) has a complete floor pan with rockers for $900 (http://www.paddockparts.com/Paddock/productr.asp?pf%5Fid=1462Y&gift=False&0=dept%2Easp %2Cdept%5Fid%3D6%26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D%2CChevel le%2FMonte%20Carlo&1=dept%2Easp%2Cdept%5Fid%3D261% 26menu%5Fid%3D%26Tree%3D0%2CChevelle%2FMonte%20Car lo%20Body%20Parts&2=product%5Ffamily%2Easp%2Cfamil y%5Fid%3D10305%26Tree%3D1%2C68%2D72%20GM%20A%2DBod y%20Complete%201%2DPiece%20Floor%20Pans&HSLB=False &mscssid=9BEDDF00932843D6BD7C73E47F10898F). Considering that all of the other places I've checked have the complete floor without rockers for $850, that's only another $50 for both rockers completely welded on and EPD primer. The rockers definitely need replacing.

When we removed the doors, I found the passenger side to be quite bad. The whole front corner was rotted out. I didn't remember to snap pictures of it, but would be a pain to repair. The driver side door isn't all that bad, but does have rot in it. Most likely, this can be repaired and the door re-skinned.

We'll see...

hillbillyinOhio
07-05-2007, 08:49 AM
Still, not bad. Ive had a lot worse projects.

swartlkk
07-05-2007, 09:48 AM
All of the rot at the bottom of the cowl sides was caused by a previous repair (before I purchased it) where they filled that entire cavity with tin foil to build off of for glassing the fender! Quick and dirty! Geez...

But yeah, I may have to fab up a patch panel for below the door hinges.

Also, I pulled off the trim on the passenger side and there are some pin holes at the bottom of the A-pillar. Not all that bad, but more stuff to patch in.

Well, I have some more pictures, but I haven't uploaded them to photobucket yet. My cousin and I did more work on tearing the interior out of it. Still have a few bolts that were giving us fits on the seat belts, but for the most part all I have left to do is the dash inside.

Anyway, I found out what this car looked like originally. The paint code is 45 which is green mist. It originally came with a dark green vinyl top which I will not be going back to. This picture here is what I might do... Not a typical color to choose which what makes me like it even more.

What's the progress Kyle?

We are thinking about getting out of the Jeeping/offroading and into the classic car world instead. We like Galaxies and Parisiennes from the 60's, convertibles, of course.

swartlkk
10-16-2007, 11:52 AM
What fun would you be if you weren't running around topless Jenn? LMAO!!!

Well, the progress has been painfully slow. The engine and trans are ready to come out. Just need to pull the trans crossmember and the motor mount bolts. The dash is still in the car as well as all of the glass. Once those things are out, then it's time for a little sand.

With everything else that has been going on lately (namely Gavin, my 2 month old son), I haven't had the time to get down there for a little over 2 months now. Dad's not complaining about the lost shop space so it hasn't been a huge priority.

Only person that keeps egging me on is my mom's cousin who is itching for another project after completing the full restoration of his 65 Chevy II SS. We will be sitting down and working out a 1 night a week schedule soon though. Just have to get through this latest round of fire training!

Ya, finding the time to work on vehicles is always hard. It's one of those things you just have to make a committment to and just do it, I guess. The thinga bout restoring classics is that sometimes it takes time to find parts, so things can be put on hold for quite a while. My father-in-law is in a club where they have the luxury of having a clubhouse where they can store their projects and work on them as they go along. I think he's been working on his latest project for over 2 years now. Of course we won't be allowed to join the club because it's a "no girls" policy haha. No matter...they're all old farts anyway. :D I'm guessing it will take until at least next year for us to find what we are looking for.

Hope you get your schedule worked out soon...can't wait to see the progress.

swartlkk
10-19-2007, 07:50 AM
Yeah, shortly here I'm going to just go down there for one night a week and work on the car for 3-4 hours. Just have to start doing it and get into a schedule. Nice thing about my car is pretty much everything is available.

Hey looks really nice so far. You said you were going to add to the motor. How good of shape is your frame, and I was wondering if you had plans for making it stronger.

swartlkk
11-01-2007, 08:49 PM
The frame is straight. That's about all I can say about it at this point. I'll know more once we get the body off. Looks great from underneith.

I think the way we are going to do the trunk floor and drop offs first, then hang and fit new door shells. Following that with the rear quarters. All before we pull the body from the frame for the first time. After that, it's time to cut out the floor and replace the floor as well as smoothing out the frame.

As far as strengthening the frame, I won't be doing much by way of strengthening it... These frames can handle power well without any modifications to them. If I were to do anything, I would box the side frame rails. The chassis setup will be stock control arms with poly bushings this time around with upgrades later on.

I'm going to rebuild the original motor again which will end up around 400HP naturally aspirated. My other SB350 4bolt motor is destine for bigger things.

DlJr82
11-01-2007, 09:04 PM
Thats cool, are you going with the stock rear end?

swartlkk
11-01-2007, 09:09 PM
For now, yes. The 10-bolt that is in there will be rebuilt and filled with an e-locker and heavier axles. Once I build my second motor, I'll be putting in a 9-inch in a fab-9 housing.

Well, I spent today out there working on it. Exhaust is out. Gas tank is out, but leaks at the filler neck so unless i can find a way to seal it back up safely, it'll be replaced. Dash and heater box are both out.

The heater box needs some work. Gotta figure out how to remove the doors and redo the seals. I'll sand blast it before painting.

Seems there was a small fire under the dash:

Dash all out:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/swartlkk/1970%20Chevelle%20Resto/th_Chevelle_20080308_21.jpg (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/swartlkk/1970%20Chevelle%20Resto/Chevelle_20080308_21.jpg)

Total picture (dash wasn't out at this point):
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/swartlkk/1970%20Chevelle%20Resto/th_Chevelle_20080308_14.jpg (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/swartlkk/1970%20Chevelle%20Resto/Chevelle_20080308_14.jpg)http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/swartlkk/1970%20Chevelle%20Resto/th_Chevelle_20080308_15.jpg (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/swartlkk/1970%20Chevelle%20Resto/Chevelle_20080308_15.jpg)

Center of the trunk is good, but the rear body mount supports in the trunk floor are shot, taking that section of the trunk floor with it. The firewall looks good inside and out. The ends of the firewall will need work, but I knew this long ago.

I have some more pictures in my 1970 Chevelle Album (http://s11.photobucket.com/albums/a187/swartlkk/1970%20Chevelle%20Resto/?start=80) towards the bottom of page 5 and all of page 6. Most of the rust that is shown is just surface rust.

Now, once I get the rear quarter windows, the windshield, and the rear window out, it'll be time for the rotisserie!!

I'm not going to keep it red anyway. I'm planning on a nice heavy metallic dark blue with probably black stripes. I don't want it to stick out, but I still want it to be recognizable.

If you want to keep it's value to keep increasing stick with the original colors. The bigest killer in a restoration is repainting it a different color than what the body tag code is. Knock anywhere from $5K to $15K off the price of the car. It mostly depends on if the car started life as a plain jane, or a true muscle car.

My '69 Firebird 400 4spd convertible is only worth $20K with a non factory black color. When funds permit, it will be returned to the factory #55 Crystal Turquoise. When I do that it's value will be at least $30K. Thank goodness my '69 Firebird OHC-6 3spd coupe was repainted in it's factory #57 Midnight Green before I bought it.

If your Chevelle is a true SS, even a 350 SS, I'd leave it the factory color. If you have a Malabu cloned SS, do whatever you want. Regardless, it's your baby...

I will not be putting the green vinyl top back onto it, but may do a black top with black stripes as seen in the picture I posted on page 2. And I will be putting all of the Malibu trim back onto it. No SS stuff other than possibly the stripes which I'm not dead set on doing.

A very old friend of mine had the same car. His was a '70 Malibu in the same color (Sea Mist Green) with a dark green top and interior. He held onto that car for the longest time, but life got in the way and he sold it before he could restore it.

I cut my teeth on Chevys. My first car was a '65 Impala SS, and I had owned a variaty of bow ties including a '71 and '72 Malibu. My all time favorite Chevy was my beat up '62 Custom Cab 1/2 ton step side.

At one point, my friend Pat let my drive his '68 GTO. That's when I switched to the dark side, and have owned Pontiacs every since. But I have keep in touch with Chevy by keeping a truck on hand.:D

For sure, go with the green!

I would say go with the stripes, it gives the car a more distinct look IMHO. I just have a feeling that it would look too plain with out them.

I do think I will be going with the stripes, but maybe not the vinyl top. Depends on how the roof looks when I get the current top off (hopefully this weekend).

This will be a driver most definitely. I might show it here and there, but I will also be racing it sooner or later. The focus right now is in the restoration of the body, chassis, and to blow the cobwebs off the engine/transmission. If I can right now, I will mini tub the rear just so I don't have to go through any more body work later on.

Later on down the road, I have another small block for it that WILL be fuel injected and forced induction (currently looking at twin turbo). The rear will be changed out, suspension completely revamped, and whatever else it takes to make it a 1/4 mile screamer! LOL

Windshield came out Friday and most all of the vinyl top is now off. I was really worried about rust through on the roof, but things are looking quite managable! The biggest problem I have found so far is the passenger front corner of the roof. The rest is pitted, but that can be managed. Things are still looking quite hopeful for not having to go back to a vinyl roof!

Here is the problem spot I was talking about:

I think I might have found a semi-local yard that I can harvest parts from.

I'm not sure that I should be as worried as I am about the passenger front of the roof, but I'm apprehensive about it. I really want this thing to be without the vinyl top and I'm going to have to do a damn good job of patching that area or it will be very noticable!

Anyway, I made some more progress (didn't take any pics though) on the trim/window removal. There are only 3 things keeping me from lifting the body off. The rear window, trunk lid, and the body mount bolts (ok so the first two aren't keeping me from lifting it off)!

Well, some of the project got moved... To my garage! LOL

I brought the doors and front fenders to my house to be able to work on them more. Setup some nice (and hot) lighting in my garage so I could see what I was doing and got to work on the driver door today. Skin is off and all of the areas that need patching are marked up. Tomorrow I will be getting some 20 gauge steel and maybe welding some things up tomorrow night!

Here are some pictures of the day...

Ok well, no one around here has the steel I need. Had to order a full 4 foot by 8 foot sheet of 20 gauge! I'm going to use up some 14 gauge stainless I have laying around to patch up the inside support. I'll have more pics coming soon.

Some more great news! I don't know how I missed it, but today I was poking around in the pile of parts under the barn when a piece of paper caught my eye. I found the build sheet for the car!! It was in the bottom seat cushion actually crimped into the springs on what is the driver side of the lower cushion!! I couldn't believe I had over looked it when I took the car apart initially.

The patch areas on the doors looks like hard places, ( corner and 3 angles) looks like its going to be a tough work. What do you thing about that? are you gonna cut that part from a donor car or produce a patch part? If you gonna produce a patch part how you gonna do that? The reason for asking is I want to learn if there is a practical way to do that.

Im really looking for to see some progress.

More good news! I just emailed H&H Chevrolet, the dealership who sold my Chevelle! They are still in business. Now lets hope they have good records and have some stuff they could send me regarding my car!!

About the doors, no, I will not be patching these areas with donor pieces as these areas are VERY common for rot. I have broken the surfaces down to mild contours that I will hand form and weld individually. With both doors, I had to remove the lower support that ties the lower hinge into the rest of the door frame to get at the back side of the rusted areas as well as repair rust in the supports themselves. These pieces will be sand blasted by the end of the week (hopefully).

Once I have the frames complete, I am planning on having them galvanized to protect everything. I'll then install the new skins and

To bump this up again, I just got off the phone with the dealership (H&H Chevrolet) that originally sold the car. Not only were they able to find the original bill of sale, but they are going to be sending me the additional carbon copies from the original along with a copy of the original BOS (keeping the original top sheet for their records)!

I am going at finding the history in both directions, trying to follow it through from when the car was originally sold as well as back through the person I purchased it from.

Really wish I could update my door post... Oh well.

Any more work done these days Kyle?

08-26-2008, 09:15 PM
Slowly. I've done some more work on metal replacement on the passenger door frame. Problem is I can not work on it after 7PM in the garage cause I make enough noise to keep the kids up... I've been working on them about 4 hours a weekend between fire training and other activities. I was working on the inner support, but that is a royal pain to form. I started building a form to use in my dad's press to form the contours that I need for these pieces. 14 gauge steel is not too nice to move around and form complex contours.

I also have been building some baskets for my dad's torch rack that I have been using and designing a 21 foot beaver tail car hauler that I will probably buy steel for in a month or so. Right now the trailer is only on paper. I'll be moving it over to CAD for the actual layout drawings.

Another update...

I had an AVET class (accident victim extrication training) where we tore apart a 1996 Astro AWD. When we popped the hood off, I noticed that it had a hydroboost setup for brake assist instead of the more conventional vacuum powered booster. A hydroboost setup uses hydraulic pressure generated by the power steering pump to assist the brakes.

It just happened that the chief of my department was the one responsible for the disposal of the van after we were through with it. Gave him a call and he said I could take whatever I wanted off of it. So I grabbed the booster, master cylinder, MAF sensor, TB, ICM, coil, distributor, and other miscellaneous weather-pack connectors.

So now I need to fab up a mounting bracket that will allow me to bolt the hydroboost unit to my firewall. It actually looks quite easy. 1/4" plate of steel and 5 holes! Free power brakes and no concerns for engine vacuum if I decide to go with a bit of a wild cam!!

Here are the pictures:
