I have a 89 Chevy S-10 Blazer

I have done alot of things since I bought it a few months ago. New water pump, gas tank, brake system, new tranny line, fixed idle, gasket to fix a oil leak, new remote oil cooler, all new exhaust from manifold to tailpipe. The thing that pisses me off is I am getting really bad gas milage and along with that no pickup. I am getting about 13 mpg which I thought would be a little bit more with blazers but then again it is older. Also the pickup issue bugs me cause sometimes I can punch it to the floor and it not do anything. When it does it takes a bit to get up to highway speed and its like gas is going thru but its not doing anything.
Any suggestions on what I could do? I am only 16 and can't afford anything unless it needs to be fixed since my mom said she would do that since she said she bought it for me and would fix anything. I feel bad cause all that stuff I mentioned that I fixed happend within a month. Bought it for $2,000 and put another $2,000 in it.
Thanks
Hanr3 09-19-2005, 11:44 AM When you replaced the exhaust system, did you put in and/or reconnect your 02 sensor. Without the 02 sensor the cpm goes into a defualt mode. It'll run, but suck gas big time.
Hanr3 09-19-2005, 11:45 AM I forgot. Congrats on that truck. Looks great for a '89. I like the grill guard and excellent choice on tires. Keep em inflated and rotated every other oil change and they will last 50,000 miles. Plus they do pretty well in the snow and mud.
Tittlebitties 09-19-2005, 01:12 PM Well when the exhaust got put on it needed a new O2 sensor so I dont think that the problem since we put a new one on. It did it before too so who knows.
Thanks :). She is my baby and I baby her all the time. She has had some great times muddin and with the back seat folded down :P. Well the back seat thing happend once and it was over the weekend but hey I have only been driving for not even 2 months yet lol.
I was thinkin with whatever I get back with taxes plus saved up money and all that I want to get a new motor. I don't plan on getting anything different besides the vortec version of mine but I doubt it will happen but its just something I would like to do.
Any other thoughts on my problem?
m00nwater 09-19-2005, 01:27 PM Ya, I'm pretty impressed with how that truck looks as well...nice job.
blazin97 09-19-2005, 10:55 PM ok not to be an ass or nothing but you say its a 89 S10 Blazer and the front end is a GMC Jimmy. did you put a diff. front end on or what. But other than that it looks great, really nice for an 89.
zero psi 09-20-2005, 12:17 AM ass.
Talusgirl 09-20-2005, 12:45 AM ya know, I was wondering about that myself....
m00nwater 09-20-2005, 12:50 AM I have to stop looking at these things late at night because I didn't even notice [sm=loser.gif]
Talusgirl 09-20-2005, 12:51 AM Good job with the truck! I have the same wheels, but they're like a dorky smoked color that's started to chip-how do you remedy that one? I want them to be silver.
You better give your mom a big hug for all the help and I hear you with the gas prob., you're gonna need like 3 after-school jobs with the gas prices. Definately doesn't sound right. Aren't I a big help?!

Same hear. I didn't notice it until you mentioned it. Doh!!! [sm=icon_stickpoke.gif]
Tittlebitties 09-21-2005, 01:19 PM Thanks to everyone who likes my blazer :)
As for the GMC grill...When I bought it the guy had it on there. Not sure why but no biggie. Funny when people say to me that its not a blazer lol.
I have a job that pays 8.50 an hour which for me is like about $150 a week during school.
Anyway...any idea on what my problem could be? Sometimes when I press the pedal to the floor it just doesnt do anything at all and sometimes it does. Also makes me uncomfy when it whines out when i hit the gas and doesnt always stop unless i let off the gas a lil bit. Like it doesnt wanna shift if i hit on the gas to get to highway speed.
swartlkk 09-21-2005, 03:37 PM That is one amazingly clean '89!
On your problem... Does it seem like the transmission isn't responding to your pedal input? If I remember correctly, your trans has a vacuum modulator as well as a kick down cable (I think...) The vacuum modulator shouldn't be all that expensive, but I don't know if that could cause the problems you are experiencing. It definitely sounds like something with the transmission not wanting to down shift, then not wanting to upshift again... It's like it doesn't know what is going on with the engine...
Hanr3 09-21-2005, 04:24 PM I missed the whole problem thingy.
The 700R4, 4L60 have TV cables. The TV cable replaces the kickdown cable and vacuum set-up, and controls when and how the tranny shifts. Could need to be adjusted. Not hard and any tranny shop might do it for free. Takes all of 1 minute to adjust it. However if there is a tranny problem, the tranny shop would be the best place to diagnose it.
swartlkk 09-21-2005, 04:27 PM Thanks for the clarification.
I couldn't remember and was just thinking back to when I rebuilt my turbo350 from my Chevelle and knew it had a kickdown and vacuum modulator.
If you wanted to adjust it yourself... Here's what a quick google search churned up:
CHEVROLET 700R4 (4L60) Transmission TV Cable Adjustment (http://www.powerdemon.com/PowertrainPointersFEB03.html)
Tittlebitties 09-21-2005, 05:14 PM Thanks :)
What you said is exactly my problem. I will check it out sometime this week or weekend since I am going somewhere for the day in a few.
Will let you know what the outcome is.
Thanks for the link also
Hanr3 - Thank you too lol...Now that I think about it I might just go somewhere and have them check it out.

I missed the whole problem thingy.
I think you and I were just too wrapped up in the fact that we missed the front end :D
Tittlebitties 09-22-2005, 12:20 AM :D
LoLoS10Blazer87 09-22-2005, 11:31 AM If the tranny fix doesn't fix your pickup and gas mileage problem, I would suggest checking for vacuum leaks on the motor
That's a nice looking truck, it's the first GMC Blazer I've ever seen :D

You got that right. :D
Plus I have to agree with
LoLoS10, that would be the first GMC Blazer I have ever seen as well. :D
swartlkk 09-22-2005, 01:18 PM From your side shots, it looks like its time to replace those door hinge pins!!! Your doors are sagging quite a bit. Make sure that you either take it someplace or buy the proper tool for compressing the springs in the door. If you don't have the proper tool, it's a B!TCH!!! And I'm speaking from experience. The proper tool can be purchased from Eastwood.com (http://www.eastwood.com). It is the Light Truck Door Hinge Spring Tool (http://www.eastwood.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemType=PRODUCT&RS=1&itemID=12244) and is $16.99 + s&h.
m00nwater 09-22-2005, 02:06 PM I wonder why the guy that had it before you wouldn't have just taken the GMC off the front...
Tittlebitties 09-22-2005, 09:44 PM LoLoS10Blazer87 - Will check that when I mess with the cable thing tomorrow or this weekend.
swartlkk - Damn...never noticed that :|. Thanks for the heads up :)
m00nwater - I have no idea lol...I am gonna leave it on there so people think its a Jimmy and when they say something I can tell them wrong [8D]
Talusgirl 09-22-2005, 11:40 PM I am just not seeing the sagging doors!! How do you identify that-for furure referance? I'm going to look again...
Tittlebitties 09-22-2005, 11:57 PM Look at the indent line on the door and the match it up with the indent thats along the other half of my blazer. The door sags a bit lower but I looked at it in person today and its not as bad as the picture shows. I am thinking that maybe my door wasnt closed all the way when I took the pic?
swartlkk 09-23-2005, 01:15 AM Doors not being closed all the way (aside from a picture taken from higher or lower) will not show up on a straight in side shot like a sagging door. Nor will the door not being closed all the way make the door sag. If, when you close the door, it lifts up even just a bit to latch (do it slow), then you door hinge pins & bushings need replacing.
Other than that and the GMC grill, GREAT looking Blazer!
LoLoS10Blazer87 09-23-2005, 02:51 AM Yeah the drivers side door is sagging pretty bad, I'd say the bushing for the pin is shot.
swartlkk, I really wish I had had that friggin tool when I replaced mine, might have saved a lot of blood, knuckle skin, and cursing, lol
Tittlebitties 09-23-2005, 09:34 AM Alright :)...Thanks!
I love this forum LOL
I really wish I had pics of the day I went muddin and got pulled out by a bulldozer. We had pics but they were on a camera phone and my bud kept saying he had a cord to put them on his computer but he was talking **** :(
m00nwater 09-23-2005, 12:56 PM You can probably email them to yourself from the phone...that's how my gf get's hers off her camera
If you do get them, post them in the offroading section...I'd like to see them!
Tittlebitties 09-23-2005, 04:17 PM Yeah I know you can do that but he has to pay extra to do that and plus it was like a month ago so I doubt he has them anymore :(. My mom said I can't go mudding anymore but all i have to do is wash it after I go muddin lol. My tranny line was a rubber line and so everytime I went to tracking or muddin the line would get ****ed. So finally got it to a metal line and pushed up more so it dont snag on anything and break.
I will get some other pictures soon enough tho. She goes awsome in the mud but I know she can do better if I actually had power.
red jimmy 92 07-25-2009, 12:19 AM i know this is a late reply but i'm new and where can i find that grille guard?
dgh91 07-25-2009, 03:17 AM hey i just read how much your making at your job do you live in washington?
Radar Locust 08-14-2009, 11:21 AM Have the timing checked. I was getting 10 MPG from my 88 S-10 Blazer and found the timing was out of whack. Once I corrected it I started getting 17-18 MPG.
Is your SERVICE ENGINE SOON light on by any chance?
