View Full Version : I've Got 2 blazers what should I build?
buildamudder 12-06-2008, 03:43 PM Hey, I'm new to this forum. Question: What would be a fairly simple project for this winter... Blazer#1[/u] I've got a 1991 K5 with a perfect frame, 350 tbi and drive-train. Runs perfect. The body is SHOT. Blazer#2[/u] I've got a 1996 4-door s-10 Blazer with blown 4.3L vortec (http://www.blazerforum.com/m_187976/tm.htm#) motor. But, the frame, tranny, drive-train and body are immaculate. My Thoughts: Slap the 350 tbi motor from the 91 into the 96 s-10. OR Swap the 96 4-door (http://www.blazerforum.com/m_187976/tm.htm#) s-10 onto the k5 rolling chassis. What areyour thoughts for a quick 5-month winter project with limited funds. Thanks in advance for you project thoughts! Any references to simular project threads would help me a lot.
My daily driver is a 88 K5 with 6" lift 35x15.5 swampers
vin791 12-06-2008, 05:49 PM if the interior is decent on the k5 and the body is fixable, fix the body. if not, shove the 350 and trans from the k5 into the s10 blazer
buildamudder 12-07-2008, 12:15 AM Putting the motor and tranny in would be the easiest by far. I would love to do that!
I think it's possible if I lose the TBI and switch to a good ole fashioned Carb?
I think the swap goes something like this:
TheS-10 blazer had a 4.3L vortec and the K-5 has a 5.7 TBI.
If it were TBI to TBI, That would be a snap.
I'veread-up andthinkthat I need:
- oil pan mod (cause it's 4x4).
- Need to utilize theK5 mounts? or Kit mounts
- some camaro iron exhaust manifolds or headers.
- and a modified computer chip for air/fuel mix.
I don't know if this is acurate or not?
Any thoughts?
I found this build and it got my head so far up in the clouds...that's when I ran out and bought the s-10.
Search: "tinks hybrid"
vin791 12-07-2008, 03:35 AM check out jagsthatrun.com they have head headers and an oil pan you can buy. no carb, just do tbi. use the computer for everything out of the k5. engine mounts in the k5, etc. etc. just make sure you have a good enough radiator and do dual electric fans. i don't have any personal experience on this just from what i've read up. i hope to do a 350 swap someday as well. theres a few people on here that have done them that know wayyyy moer about it than me.
buildamudder 12-07-2008, 10:06 AM Thank you for the parts reference! I'm gonna do it. I have to remember to keep it realistic when I pick a project. I'm one of those freaks that gets obsessed and starts living in the garage. The body swap would be cool, but wouldn't be finished by spring time. I'm stripping the k-5 down and bagging parts. It should be a shell by Wed. I'll store the chassis and scrap the body (Sawzall). I'll take some pics and see if I can figure out how to post them.
Does anyone want the removable K5 top? Otherwise, Ill have to chop it up to throw it out.
I'm in Lakewood, OH. if anyone wants the top.
Blazin_Jason 12-07-2008, 11:02 AM I still say put the s10 body on the k5 frame. I mean look how sick this is.

crazy4wdracer 12-07-2008, 12:35 PM Definitely put the S-10 body on the K5 frame. That truck that Blazin_Jason posted is beautiful! I like the Earnhardt colors too.
buildamudder 12-08-2008, 09:50 AM Yeh, that is sick.
The s-10 blazer was delivered to my hose last night. It's soooo clean.
The k-5 teardown is going smooth and quick (but I'm freezing my @ss off in the garage)
The motor and trans are comming out as unit so when it goes into the s-10 i'm going to pull the clip and radiator supports and kinda slide in from the front instead of drop in at an angle.
THEN I WAS THINKING...
If I sawzall off the rest of the body on the k-5. Then remove the front clip from the s-10.
I could butt the s-10 right up againt the rear of the k-5 chassis and use a come-allong and slide the s-10 body right onto the k-5.
SPECS AND MEASUREMENTS.....
The 91 k-5 wheelbase is 106.5 the 96 s-10 blazer 4-door wheelbase is 107.
this could be the easiest body swap ever andWITHOUT a crane or back-hoe.
I'm going out to measue the center of the back axle - to the firewall on both vehicles.
If they match....I shouldn't have to re-position anything except body mounts and steering.
Either way both motors have to come out.
Well gotta get out there and get wrenching.
buildamudder 12-08-2008, 04:33 PM Went out and measured k-5 chassis and 4-door s-to body.
Measured EVERYTHING...Front/Back, Side-to-Side, Firewall to rear axle...Ect....
My k-5 motor on K-5 Frame is nearly perfect. Only issue is 1 and 1/2 inch placement of the motor.
The motor is to far back by just a bit....So, I'll either sledge hammer the s-10 firewall or cut it out and move it back. This way I won't have to mess with the k-5 drivetrain.
Today's progress:
K-5 front clip is gone, Removable Top is off, Windshield gone, 4-pillars cut and roof gone.
By tommorow, The entire body will be off the k-5 and I'll gets some pics posted.
Does anyone have any suggestions on what i can rent to lift the s-10 body straight-up so that I can roll the Chassis in and out?
samuknow 12-08-2008, 05:06 PM I am freaking out to see pics. This sounds like an awesome build.
buildamudder 12-09-2008, 04:45 PM Alright, I've got pics but my camera won't read on my PC. So, when my girlfriend comes home I'll download them to hers and post them.
Today is day 3 of the s-10 body swap and the entire body except fot the firewall & dash has been pulled off of the K-5. My brother stopped by and has been helping so things have gone pretty quick. I didn't have any way to lift the body, so we cut the whole entire truck up into pieces and now I have to get all of that into my 88 k-5 and scrap it. What a work-out!
My vacation time ends tommorrow. I never thought I'd be this far ahead of schedule so I've decided the next step will be to grind, blast, scrap and burn all of the undercoating off of the frame and coat the whole thing with POR-15.
Pics of rolling chassis comming soon.
blazin8556 12-09-2008, 09:27 PM a fork lift will successfully lift the body off the frame. i used to buy, sell, and scrap cars and trucks in my spare time. i have seen a little forklift pick up a 5,000 lb. 1994 Ford F-250 extended cab long bed pickup truck. While the pre power stroke diesel engine and trans was still in the truck. it had no wheels and was loaded on my utility trailor with a crane truck. eager to see pics as well..
buildamudder 12-10-2008, 02:47 PM Here are some pics of the two blazers.
The K-5 is torn down to rolling chassis and the 96 is the blue one with no motor.
I circled in red the parts on the s-10 that I have to fix...Otherwise, this truck is super clean with the dark charcoal or black leather interior package. All it needs on the body is a rear bumper replaced and a small dent on the passanger door.
Now the bad news:
I wanted to put the s-10 on the K-5 frame....I started banging the rust off of the K-5 frame and my hammer went right through a spot above the rear axle. The full frame can be patch welded but I'm wanted this to be perfect. So, as you can imagine I'm a little bumbed-out.
I could just put the 350 motor and tranny into the S-10 blazer and be done. But, I'm trying to build a SOLID mudder. I'm scrapping this project now and picking-up a whole truck 1983 k-5 relatively rust free and I'm going to tranfer the skyjacker lift and 35' super swampers from my 88 onto it.
Does anyone want the S-10 Blazer for $550. That's what I've got into it. (I paid $500 for the truck w/out motor and $50 for delivery). If anyone is interested please let me know. I live in Cleveland, Ohio.
buildamudder 12-10-2008, 03:09 PM Screw-it. I'm not going through the hassle of setting-up an account with photobucket just to attach a pictue to my message. If anyone wants the 1996 S-10 blazer 4x4 4-door. Clean body. no motor...go to craigs list Cleveland.
Before I started this forum, I had no idea that I was going to have to jump through hoops to post progress pictures. My intent was to provide a nice detailed account of the body swap so that others could easily do their own. Oh well, sorry I wasted anyone's time. :(
samuknow 12-10-2008, 04:10 PM Just attach them. That is all you need to do.
buildamudder 12-10-2008, 06:38 PM I have an icon for "ADD IMAGE" but it wants to reference a URL.
I can't "Attach" anything. I even tried converting to .gifs and doing a copy/paste....
Wierd, I work on computers all day in the graphics industry (15yrs) but without a bounce site like photobucket, myspace or the like; I can't post any photos. I guess i understand because otherwise the forum would get overwhelmed trying to store photos on it.
To be honest, This is the first FORUM I've ever joined. It really seems to be a great source for information on the one thing I really treasure....MY CHEVY!
vin791 12-10-2008, 06:53 PM im interested in the 350 and th350 trans that was in the 91. it is tbi right? you have a pm
dinobike 12-13-2008, 12:51 AM i would do the k5, harder to find, and very cool. why r u thinking not the k5? not engine? just drop any 350 or even a 305 in it. let me know what u think ur going to do? id go old school, k5 b better 4x4 too.
buildamudder 12-13-2008, 08:01 AM 92-95 cpi (or my CSFI) vortec the harness must be stripped or severely modified to accept 91 tbi 350.
Basically, The blazer I picked up was one year too new.
buildamudder 12-17-2008, 01:07 PM Here's some pics I hope
