GregW 05-19-2009, 06:05 AM Ill start this thread off with the whole story of how this truck arrived in my garage. (short version)
I was selling my bike, a Honda CBR900RR, and looking to buy a project S10. preferably I wanted to build a 2 door blazer with an LT1, shaved handles and roof rack, vette wheels, etc. I have always wanted a Typhoon but could never afford one in decent enough shape for me. The thought of an AWD V8 truck would be great but shoot I could never afford one.
Then there it was... http://s-seriesforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=76031&highlight=sold
I sold the bike, loaded the family and drove on out to NC to pick it up. Just so happens that my sister lives about 80 miles from the truck and the kids had never traveled to that area of the country. hehe
I met Jeff at is house and he was very helpful and informative. He pointed out about everything he knew about the truck and showed me all the good and the bad. We BSed for a more hours than my family would have liked, but they knew how excited I was so they didnt mind much. Jeff loaded the Jimmy with loads of goodies and helped me get it situated on the trailer. Off we went!

http://www.tycloness.com/images/towing.jpg
The trip was a good time. We stopped and saw the sights like the National Corvette Museum, and drive straight through. They were a few incidents, as always....
We stopped at a gas station and I checked the truck over. I guess someone forgot to screw in the left taillight. lol Opppsss... Luckily it doesnt have nice new paint and didnt break, scratch or dent anything.
http://www.tycloness.com/images/taillight.jpg
Jeff tried to show me how to tie up the excess strap on the tie-downs. I guess I didnt get it right as one strap came undone and was dragging. Good thing I noticed it before any real damage was done.
http://www.tycloness.com/images/strap.jpg
I wont even talk about the rain... No trip is complete without some rain!
http://www.tycloness.com/images/rain.jpg
The rain was ok because when we got back to Texas Im sure the 70mph driving mixed with 101 degree temp was alike a large hairdryer for the Jimmy! lol
http://www.tycloness.com/images/temp.jpg
But through it all... 2,500 miles later, about 150 gallons of gas, lots of fun, hours of not sleeping, and a memorable experience for life... We made it home!
http://www.tycloness.com/images/home.jpg
GregW 05-19-2009, 06:06 AM I also picked up an LT1 intake w/ fuel rails and injectors from CragsList for $70. It also came with the Corvette LT1 fuel rail covers! I blasted the intake and sold it on eBay for $125 and kept the corvette motor shrouds as well as the spare injectors and have 1/2 polished the fuel rails for sale on eBay.
The pass side Vette cover fits great, but the driver side needs some Dremmel notching as the braided fuel lines are in the way.

GregW 05-19-2009, 06:06 AM I got a wrecked Typhoon for parts and it donated the rear driveshaft to me.
Now that the drivetrain is complete. Time for a test drive!

GregW 05-19-2009, 06:13 AM OK, I worked on the Tyclone again today. Work has been slowing down and I think Ill be able to get the truck into the body shop soon. It is going to be Corvette Electron Blue I suppose.
In body it needs the dent fixed on the right quarter panel (thanks Jeff heh heh), emblem holes filled on the fenders, antenna hole shaved, a few misc dings and dents. Trim the rear of the cowl hood for proper fitment.
Then Im gonna give it a quick coat of black to be able to see all the little dings/dents and imperfections in the body. We will fix all those and then take all the black back off and get ready for paint.
Then I will send the fenders, hood, doors, and tailgate through paint to have the underside/insides painted electron blue, plus the door jambs, firewall, and tailgate jamb painted as well. After that its reassembly time!!
So today...
Pulled off the core support and went to work replicating the work that Zach had done on the original one. The truck is an 85, so it came with a 82-90 core support. To convert it to the Ty look I got a 91-93/94 core support from my buddy's 92 Typhoon and have to modify it to fit the radiator and other little details that Zach did to the old style support.
I trimmed out the lower part today to fit the rad in and then repainted it. The rad support still have the Typhoon routing info sticker on it as well. Helps to add to the Tyclone - clone appeal.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_3109-sm.jpg
Here you can see the piece I removed to fit the rad in.

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_3108-sm.jpg
GregW 05-19-2009, 06:13 AM Yesterday I worked on the truck. I decided that I was going to get my core support done. Whitfield stopped by and a few hours later... Voila!
To switch over to the 92 Typhoon core support was quite a bit of cutting and drilling. Its all done now and installed.

I installed the battery in the trunk. Cleans up the engine bay quite a bit and lets me drive it around the shop without inner fenders.

I go in my new hood pins! Thanks to Marty M, otherwise I never would have heard of these. He is using hood pins from the same company on his Syborg TT.

My final decision for my paint scheme will not make everyone happy, but it pleases me and will make the truck truly unique and stand out wherever it goes. I have decided to paint it to match a 1996 Corvette Grand Sport. Stripes and all.
There were 1000 Grand Sports created in 1996 to commemorate the end of the production of the C4 vette. They all had an LT4, black ZR1 wheels, plus Admiral blue paint, a white stripe and then two red "hash marks" down the left "fender". I am going to do my truck in Admiral blue, with the painted white stripe with white pinstripes like the original, and add the hasg marks to the fender. I also am ordering the Grand Sport emblems for the fenders and painting the C5 18" wheels black. The truck has a "Corvette" engine, Vette wheels, Vette shifter, and a Vette paintjob.
Im pretty excited to see what it will look like all completed!

GregW 01-30-2010, 01:45 PM Re-worked the doors and right fender again this week. Got them in primer and should be ready this next week for paint... Still have the block some of the truck.

Got my inner fenders sanded down, re-primed and painted semi-gloss black.

GregW 01-30-2010, 01:46 PM Started blasting my hardware to put the truck back together. I plan to blast every nut and bolt and repaint them. Sounds like fun huh?

GregW 01-30-2010, 01:46 PM Today I painted the core support semi-gloss black. Taped off and left the emissions control label that says "SYCLONE 4.3" on it. Its a real OEM Typhoon core support.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0239_op.jpg
Then installed both inner fenders which were just painted semigloss black as well.
This is the first time I have had the front end put back on since I relocated the battery to the trunk. What a great mod! Saves a ton of space up front!

GregW 01-30-2010, 01:47 PM And through all this, the baby slept! So this little guy is going to grow up with a AWD LT1 truck in the garage. Lucky kids, I grew up with a Oldsmobile Delta 88 Royal Brougham in the garage. hehe
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0241_op.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 01:47 PM So now we have both fenders installed. And have been fitting, and test fitting the goodies. Lookin good and blue!

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0272_op.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:06 PM So today I started creating the brackets to mount the blinkers in the bumper cover. I also worked on straightening out the fog light brackets and mounting them.
I mocked up my stripe as well. Looks like 18" down the bumper and the front of the hood, then 19" at the rear of the hood and then 19" down the roof, and 18" down the tailgate and rollpan.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_9364_op.jpg
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_9361_op.jpg
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_9362_op.jpg
Then set my hood pins on the hood to see what they would look like and installed the passenger side bumperette.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_9368_op.jpg
And the under hood shot with all the blue! WOOOT!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_9365_op.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:07 PM I started installing the hood pins I got from HoodPins.com (http://www.hoodpins.net/products.php) And it was very scary! To spend over $400 on a hood and then drill holes in it?! Ahhh!
Anyway, it worked out just fine and they good great! I need to adjust them and install the scuff plates. Figured it would be easier BEFORE paint!

*Wipes away drool*
Sweet project, I really wish I had the time, skills, patience, money, and other resources to do something like this. Kudos to you on all of this. Can't wait to see the finished product!
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:10 PM I have been working on installing all the lights in the front of the Typhoon fiberglass bumper cover. The marker lights needed some brackets made for them out of scrap sheet metal and the fog lights need to be bolted in.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0320_op.jpg
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0321_op.jpg
The issue with the fog lights is that they came from a Typhoon that had a head-on collision driving the wrong way on the freeway. One is straightened and corrected. The other still needs some work, as you can see in the picture i badly bent and out of shape (you should have seen it before I started!)
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0322_op.jpg
Here is a picture of the front of the wrecked Typhoon the day I bought it. haha Can you believe the fog lights and brackets are still good? haha
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_6419_op.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:11 PM So I decided to hit up some salvage yards for some goodies today. I had a pretty good score thanks to a cash for clunkers 1993 Blazer that was in great shape.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0343_op.jpg
Nice interior as well except for the fact that someone left the pass window down and it just rained.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0345_op.jpg
The score...
- 4 fender flares
- Fender sound deadening baffles (guess I lost one)
- Front bumper side brackets
- Overhead console (including harness)
- Rear view mirror with lights (including harness)
- A bunch of misc bolts I needed (like my missing torsion key bolt)
- Seat side covers
- Factory 1993 S10 Blazer cassette tape!
All for the grand total of ... $43 with tax!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_4923_op.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:11 PM Ever since I went to the salvage yard on Saturday I have been thinking very seriously about changing the truck up a bit. I finally made up my mind yesterday and today I went back to that salvage yard and got some more parts.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0480_op.jpg
I got two great condition 93 Blazer doors and a nice wiper cowl for $90. heh

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0487_op.jpg
So any guesses what I decided to do?
FOR SALE:

GregW 01-30-2010, 02:12 PM I'm not a big hood pin fan either. I don't like them much at all actually but I ran into a big issue with my hood latch. Zach mounted the engine in the forward position. Jeff was going to move it back but decided to keep the stock Typhoon drive shaft lengths. I agree, its better that way. So that means that the engine sits where the radiator used to, the radiator is inside the core support where the A/C condenser used to be, and the A/C condenser will take the place of the vertical support for the hood latch. This leaves me with a few options. 1) Custom fabricate and weld a new vertical support and hack up my grille for it to fit. 2) run the truck with no A/C 3) use hood pins and leave the vertical support off and keep my A/C.
Answers:
1) Im not a machinist or fabricator. I dont trust myself or anyone else to make a support properly so that my hood wont fly open. I dont want to hack up my grille.
2) I live in Texas! The nice months are 100+ degrees, GOTTA have A/C!
3) I have the hookup for some sweet hood pins and its a different look for the truck. Done.
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:13 PM The Vette wheels stick out about an inch in the front. So I have been thinking about fender flares for awhile. I decided to try the stock black ones from a 93 Blazer. My only issue is that with Sonoma GT bumperettes, I'll have to figure out a way for them to work together.
So I got a spare flare and have been experimenting and haven't figured anything out yet besides I wont like any look I have come up with.
Without fender flare...
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0557_op.jpg
With fender flare...
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0558_op.jpg
Bumperette and flare look ok from the front. I would have them both painted to match.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0543_op.jpg
But they look crazy from the side or back. Dangit...
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0554_op.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:14 PM So them I was thinking about maybe customizing some Bravada flares

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/IMG_0476_op.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:15 PM The Grand Sport had black wheels, so that means that my truck needs black wheels! Here is a test fit of a black wheel on the truck. Man I love that look! Ever since I was in high school and I saw my 1st Beretta GTZ, I have wanted to have a car with black 5 spoke wheels!!
It REALLY makes the brakes stand out! Now I certainly need to paint the brakes. Red calipers with aluminum colored brackets.

GregW 01-30-2010, 02:15 PM Got my new doors ready to get into the body shop.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jse_Picture_014.jpg
And my new door handles are waiting! The left door will have a key, the right door is flush with no keyhole.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jse_Picture_013.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:16 PM Update:
I have been working on getting it running again. Yeah I know... It cracks but no fire. I think its an overfueling issue due to never letting it run. So I pulled the plugs, which were covered is gas, and cleaned em. Im gonn go back and put them back in and try to start it again.
I did have an accident here at the shop. One of my new doors was on a work stand so I could strip it and de trim it... someone walked by and bumped it. CRASH! Door is now all beat up, so it needs a bunch of work to click it out again. ack.

GregW 01-30-2010, 02:17 PM Dec 23rd
I love a white Christmas!!!!

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_picture_026-1.jpg
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:17 PM I am tired of waiting for the bodyman to get time to work on my doors so.... One again I am learning to become a bodyman! Whooo.... suck.
Anyway, I took an old 89 Blazer door and started chopping it up for some trial/test cuts. Im glad I did because the handle will NOT install the way I planned for it to.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2029.jpg
Then I used the overall shape to cut out the 2nd gen blazer door handle.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2030.jpg
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2031.jpg
What I realized is that I can not place the handle in the "stock" location due to the fact that the back of the handle sticks out too far and would hit the glass and not let the window roll down. Bad deal. So time for some planning.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2032.jpg
oktain 01-30-2010, 02:17 PM I've been waiting for these updates since I became an "active member" in 09 lol.
Man I wish I had money/time to do something like this. Awesome looking ride!
GregW 01-30-2010, 02:18 PM I realized that I can mount the spring and rod part of the 2nd gen handle outside of the run channel for the window. Yet to do this I would need to remove the factory bracket and flip it to the other side and re-rivet it.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2035.jpg
Once that was done I measured the real door and got to cutting for real this time around.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2033.jpg
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2036.jpg
I got it all trimmed and lined up, held in place with some magnets... Welding time!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2037.jpg
I started to get it all tacked in and then DOH!! DAMMMMIT!!! I put it in upside down! Seriously. I did that. My blonde moment. Dang...
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2038.jpg
I cut it back out and put it in correctly.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2039.jpg
Made sure that the handle fit correctly
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2040.jpg
Now I know that I can do some of this stuff, Ill probably have the bodyman finish it up with some mudwork and such. But the hard part is done on door #1. WOOOO!!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_2041.jpg
I have a bit of a gap to full and then the finishwork and prep begins.
Man Im excited now!

GregW 01-30-2010, 02:21 PM So its official! The year is 2010 and the Tyclone is now a classic. 25 years and older is considered a classic which means it is now emissions exempt!

GregW 01-30-2010, 05:07 PM So the doors are just about ready for paint!

They truck still had a few areas that we found to fix. At this point, its not a 1000 point show car that will win at the next concourse event, but its a pretty darn clean, very unique, and surprisingly quick 1985 Jimmy!
So with the stage we are at now, I think that we'll be seeing color on the truck next week. Unless something drastic pops up... I see blue in my future!

Blazin_Jason 01-30-2010, 05:35 PM I never noticed before that the phoons had those handles. I plan on doing that handle swap too on my blazer once I can find some donor doors. Build is nice, very thorough.

I dunno man, everything on that stripe looks great except for at the very front of the hood. The passenger's side stripe looks closer to the edge of the hood.
preditor5.0 01-31-2010, 03:10 PM :icon_couch: patiently awaiting the completion of this sick looking truck!
GregW 02-02-2010, 10:37 PM Well, the doors got blocked and primed AGAIN today. The bodywork is now done on the body. Final block on the doors tomorrow and then I need to jamb them and hopefully paint on Thurs or Fri! Wish me luck! I cant WAIT to see color on the truck!!!

i think the reason this thread was missed by so many of us was, it went from his first (of many) posts on May 19th, with one other comment 10 days later, and then jumped all the way to Jan 30th of this year, without any new posts. guess this guy has been pretty busy (and the progress shows it).
Nice!
Where did you get your clear bumper lights/corners and the pod?
those are probably the hardest lenses to find. we (my brother & i) searched for a whole Summer to find those, and that was 10 years ago! (ended up finding them @ a show in Battle Creek)
truck is looking sweet brother, nice colour too.
kinda funny, i just found some local guy getting rid of his '88 2 door, that he swapped a Typhoon drive line into.
but yours is gonna have those two extra cylinders, takin it to the next level of coolness! :D

Yeah I forgot to update for a year or so, then copied all my build info from my forum over here. Its always good to have an audience with projects like this, because when I run into trouble... I have a few times... its good to get other peoples input that know more than I do! lol
Where is that swapped Typhoon??

hahahaha, it's been over 10 years since my last trip there. i was supposed to go down there September 9 & 10, 2000 (that's right, it's not a typo), but my wife kinda got bi*chy, 'cause our son (our first) was due any day. he actuall arrived on the 11th @ 7:30 in the morning. see, i told her i would've made it back in time! :icon_wink:
Where is that swapped Typhoon??
up here in Toronto. did i already mention it was a '88 he drop it all into?
so about the story (HJ'ing) up there.
what's the plan on the interior?
leeclark 02-10-2010, 11:54 PM still waiting to see what it looks like with the corvette grand sport paint job and black rims. bet its sweet
Kevin.N.Odom 02-11-2010, 12:47 AM wicked nice
GregW 02-11-2010, 01:41 AM So here is the stock Corvette fuel rail cover that I have sanded smooth and primed.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_100_4394.jpg
To install it you need a set of these mounting pins.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_100_4392.jpg
As you can see, it doesnt fit with the fuel lines there.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_100_4396.jpg
That gives me an excuse to buy a Dremel!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_100_4403.jpg
I had to trim both sides. The one side is the regulator, the other side are the lines. A little more trimming and it will be good to go!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_100_4400.jpg
what's the plan on the interior?
I got a wrecked Typhoon for parts! What a deal! MINT truck that just had a head on collision.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_6492_op.jpg
Here is a picture of the front of the wrecked Typhoon the day I bought it. haha Can you believe it still ran??!

http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/100_6555_op.jpg
So the interior has a few changes...
Grant wheel, 3 gauge pod, power drivers seat, new carpet, overhead console, lighted mirror, sonoma gt gauges, battery on trunk, 89 and older rear trim panels (no shoulder belt tensioners), 89 and older rear seat brackets and hinges (no shoulder belts), and a little stereo.
The doors now have had their final block and are about to be installed!

Grant wheel,
sure i would. i've seen a rad craddle pushed back on top of the front tires (mid '90's Sierra), and the guy started it up, so he could move it outta the intersection so traffic could get moving again.
sooooo.........that Grant wheel is going on, eh......what are you doin' with the factory one from the Typhoon? :icon_naughty:

i've been looking for one for awhile now, ever since i took a friends for a drive. (i want one for my 'Burb).
GregW 02-13-2010, 08:59 PM Almost got the truck painted today, but we ran out of the pearl the Grand Sport formula calls for. So Monday is paint day! Color on Monday!!! Whoooo!!!
So the day started out with fitting and aligning the front bumper cover and grille.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_3249.jpg
Then I cleaned out the truck and hosed it all down. It needed a SERIOUS scrubdown after being in the shop for over 2 1/2 years! haha Anyway, we started masking it! Its getting closer to color!!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_3251.jpg
Almost there!

i like the attention to detail you put into the paint. carrying the stripes right through the seal/windshild area-major points right there.
as for the assembley instructions, that's why i bag 'n tag everything i remove from a project. although i have misplaced the stash of bags on one occasion. :icon_doh:

absolutly, the 1st gen '91+ GM grills rock!
those are gonna look amazing in white. i was actually thinkig you should have kept the stripe flowing through the grill, but it may be a little too much. and if you were gonna do that, then the whole grill should be done blue to match as well.
i think you called it right (leaving the cross bars black).

GregW 02-20-2010, 06:39 PM Thanks guys!
Well I have come to a crossroads with the project and I need some help. WIRING.
Zach and Jeff wired everything and it was running when I got it. 85 Jimmy interior harness custimized a bit, and 85 Jimmy under hood harness spliced with 96 Caddy harness for the engine. It runs the truck, allows you to tune it via the ALDL port, has headlights, tail lights, turn signals, and brake lights. That's it.
Fast forward, I have. 1992 Typhoon interior. Full power. Windows, mirrors, locks, fogs, alarm, keyless entry, etc.
I figured I could just install the Ty interior harness and then install the Ty interior around it. It LOOKS like it should work... I installed the harness last night and alas... The truck is dead in the water. Not sure why.
I suppose that without having the Ty shifter in, since it has the B&M Quicksilver right now, without the neutral safety switch, that alone would kill it. I need to find that little harness too. Any ideas on that one?
Any help or insight would be appreciated.

A window and a tail light. Woooo!

GregW 02-20-2010, 07:24 PM Here is part of the issue I think. I am going to run the Stock Typhoon center console and shifter, but I cant run the stock Typhoon steering column. I have to use the 85 steering column which doesn't have the cable that runs to the shifter, therefore I cant have the neutral safety switch in the truck because it all plugs into the column. I suppose I need to bypass it.
Any me how I know the difference between the 85 and 92 steering columns.... What a PITA!!

GregW 02-21-2010, 05:14 AM I have been thinking about how far this project has really come. It made me dig up the old pictures of the truck. So here is some interesting background info and pictures.
in July of 2006 my, then girlfriend/now wife, and her two kids (now stepkiddos) set out on a 2400 mile trip to buy a truck. A stripped and unfinished project truck in North Carolina. It just so happened that my sister lives about an hour away from the truck, so we used that as an excuse to visit her. It was the only time in my life that I visited my sister, independent of a family trip with my parents, before she died at age 35 in 2008. I have since adopted her son and we had a baby of our own, who will both grow up with a hot rod Jimmy in the garage. heh
On the way to NC to buy the Tyclone we stopped by Bowling Green KY (2 hours out of the way) to visit the Corvette museum. Here is a picture my wife snapped of me drooling over my dream vette. The 1996 Grand Sport. I bought one thing there that day. A original 96 Grand Sport brochure, which I used as reference to mask the stripes. heh

We stopped by Hotwire's house visit the truck and drop off my trailer for the weekend.

Then visited my sister for the weekend. Now that she is gone, it means alot to me that we made this trip. Thanks Tyclone.

We drove back to Hotwire's place where he is helping me load parts while his wife and little one say good riddance to the Jimmy! Little did she know that there were three more S10s in their future!

It was a fun and memorable bonding experience with the soon to be step children.

Seeing us at gas stations was a common sight on that trip.

And it made it safely back home!

Doesnt even look like the same truck.
Fast forward 3 1/2 years. ALOT has happened, ALOT of changed, but Im still working away at the Tyclone which I plan to have in my household for decades.
old skool luvr 02-21-2010, 10:55 AM Here is part of the issue I think.
What a PITA!!
the 92 and the 85 Steering columns side by side.

you can swap the lower sections of the two columns. been awhile since i've done one, but as far as i remember, you just start @ the top, and work your way down.
quite the pictoral you put up there about the road trip to get the Tyclone. sorry to hear about your sister, but that was nice to adopt your nefew. sounds like you've got quite the busy household! :)
i'll ask a buddy of mine again about the column swap, he's the one that helped me on the first one.
Spectreblazer 02-21-2010, 11:40 AM if you can get your hands on either mitchell or alldata diagrams greg, it will make your life 100x easier in your wiring. i'll look monday and see if they go to 85.
ohsofly 02-22-2010, 03:11 AM That is such a beautiful truck, you have an amazing attention to detail. I wouldnt change a thing about it. I just love everything about it. I think you are building my most favorite S series ever... WOW! That paint scheme couldnt be a better choice. AMAZING work my man! Im following this thread for sure. Making it look like a Gran Sport made me seriously Gran Sport a wood! That thing is going to turn heads and cause accidents once its on the roads.
pj5454302 02-23-2010, 05:43 AM Being a body guy I apreceate when someone spends this much time on the details. I have seen many a porject like this turn out bad due to a rushed paint job. Glad to see you arent rushing to finish, thats how mistakes happen. The more time you spend on it the better it will look.
GregW 03-21-2010, 08:39 AM Update... The truck was painted a little over a month ago now and I have been SOOO busy. Working 6 day weeks ever since it was painted. Trying to spend time with the family and my four kiddos...
Anyway, I ran into an issue. I have the truck painted and want to bring it home. PROBLEM. I dont have room yet. I need to finish the shop in the back yard so that i can empty the garage and move everything into the workshop. This means I need to FINISH THE WORKSHOP... So that is what I have been working on for the last few weeks... almost daily.

Slowly but surely!
GregW 03-21-2010, 08:44 AM Its wet sanding and buffing time. Suck.
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_3655.jpg
You can see here, the right part is cut and buffed, the left side is not. Look at the reflection of the light in it. The right is like a mirror, the left side looks good, but not a mirror finish. The buffed part looks AWESOME!
http://i373.photobucket.com/albums/oo177/ShuggsRR/Tyclone/jsw_img_3652.jpg
I have a few places to go over. I need to repaint the grille as the stripes are a bit off and the top is a bit dry.
Here is where I burned through a stripe on the hood while sanding its mirror smooth. Suck.

The truck looks so sad sitting there under all that dust. sniff sniff

zedartwo 03-21-2010, 10:49 AM Well hopefully soon enough you get right back to working on it "full" time and we get to see this thing progress more.
old skool luvr 03-21-2010, 11:42 AM and you know Greg, once you finish cutting the body, you're gonna need to ripout the driveline, so you can properly clean (detail) everything under there too.
looks like your other project is coming along quite nicely as well.
like everyone else, once she's back together, i'm lookin' forward to seeing that first road test.
