View Full Version : rhino lining my interior!
t.lyttle 05-29-2009, 06:48 PM im removing all my carpet and rhino lining my interior....today i started kinda late but i got the cargo areas carpet removed....was fairly easy to remove and to my surprise no rust at all...not even surface rust not bad for 20 years old....tomorrow im gonna remove the rest of the carpet and start laying down the liner...my plan is to leave the carpet out and put down 3 coats of liner and just throw down some heavy duty mats...i mean lets face it mud is BAD for carpet....pics to follow
amazinnblazin 05-29-2009, 07:51 PM Just remember that the liner, when dry, can be scratchy worse than sandpaper. I have helped RL a couple of Jeep interiors, still looks brand new after 3-4 years..
t.lyttle 05-29-2009, 09:17 PM thats fine im not gonna be bare footed..lol...
bobditts 05-29-2009, 10:20 PM make sure you clean all of the surfaces and it helps to scuff them up a little.
Neat idea...I never thought of putting RL inside. Would make it great for muddin' though. Can't wait to see it finished!
Unlimitedsp 05-29-2009, 10:33 PM Should look good when your done. I helped my buddy do that with his samurai. We used Line-X for his. We also drilled some drain plugs in the floor. That way when the inside gets coated in mud all he has to do is spray her down with the hose.
ABN31B 05-30-2009, 02:20 AM I just finished that very same project about 3 weeks ago.
About 1/2 way down (http://www.blazerforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=30602&page=2)
You are lucky you did not have that damn adhesive tar crap under your carpets...
Use something electric (wire brush on grinder, rust remover disk on drill, etc) to speed the prep work up. The more you prep the better it goes. Also you should steer clear of the Rhino liner unless you are in love with it, sponsored by them, or have a buddy cutting you a sweet deal. It is not flexable or as easy to repair as the Line-X style liner. Hell I used Herculiner. $75 got me a gallon, a handle, 2 rollers, a scratchy pad, and a 2" paint brush. Everything a growing boy needs to do 3 coats and you'll have a bit left over.
Also while it is tempting to pour it on think, wait until your last coat to go heavy. If you put too much on and it pools up, it will crack and trap moisture defeating the whole point.
I will try to get some finished pics up since those are post 1st coat shots.

thanks for the info im gonna look at the herculiner today...thanks for all the info guys...im hopeing to have it all done today...update this later this evening
ABN31B 05-30-2009, 01:38 PM Walmart for $77 OR go to o'reilly's/checker/schucks and they price match $75 at Walmart. Don't think about the math, just go and price match...
Also if you just use Acetone 9and let it evaporate) you can blow off the nearly impossible to find Xylene they suggest for post-prep, pre-paint wipe down.
You will also need a drill mounted mixing wand since you can't just shake up bedliner. Holy crap and some dishwashing gloves! That stuff is murder to get off skin! Acetone straight just made my whole hand grey
One more thing, if you can leave your windows down and hatch up all night (over ride dome light). The smell of the herc (or any bedliner) curing is a little rough, but not chemically. More like bad candy... you will see. Also if you park in the sun, crack your windows for the first week or so
t.lyttle 05-30-2009, 06:00 PM well got rained out cant finish...damn i need a garage..lol...but ill keep this updated...and i couldnt find any liner local....went to the linex store were the do it for ya they told me 985 for two coats...yeah right thats crazy....anyway im gonna use herculiner just have to get it off the web
carterx 05-30-2009, 06:44 PM I think that would be great to have. If you throw lots of stuff into the truck that stuff will be great to have.
ABN31B 05-30-2009, 07:00 PM t.lyttle, try auto parts stores that deal in all of the crappy clip on/stick on mods. Auto-Zone, Advanced, etc. Also Walmart should have it in stock in the kit. Call around and save some gas. I know how frustrating it is to get sidelined in this thing, and driving around half finished sucks. Sorry to hear about the rain :(
Also carterx in addition to allowing you to toss crap in without care, and the obvious ease of clea up, it is also a superb sound deadener. It goes from sheet metal to rubberized sheet metal soaking up a lot of the noise (both vehicle and road) and also acts as a pretty good insulator. Hell people use it to coat sub enclosures or team it up with your favorite sound deadening mat to trap in the beats yo.
Sybex 06-04-2009, 09:37 AM I recently did this as well to my 93' Full-Size Blazer. I gutted it, sanded it down, vacuumed it out, acetoned the inside down, and put 2 coats of herculiner down. I am very impressed with the entire application and the way it looks/feels.
When removing my interior panels in the back along the wheel hubs their were holes in the framing. I didnt want these showing so I went up to the local welding/pipe supply shop and purchased a sheet of 4'x8' 18guage Tin. I got some poster board and made a template of the each side to cover those sidings. I then placed the templates on the sheet of tin, traced it out, and cut it with electric cutting sheers. I glued automotive padding to the inside to help with insulation and noise reduction and mounted them to the sides with self tapping metal screws. Looks like a solid truck bed.
See pictures for details (sorry for camera phone pics)
Gutted and you can see a glimpse of the sheet of tin on the wheel wells.

Herculiner applied and you can see the sheet metal siding over the wheel wells looking solid.

Enjoy!
swartlkk 06-04-2009, 09:55 AM Looks good! I will be doing this to the back of my K5 as well!
oisinirish 06-05-2009, 07:45 AM Nice. Might rethink my approach after seeing that.
Nice work!! I like that a lot. I might think about going the back of my truck someday. Thanks for the pics!
ABN31B 06-05-2009, 12:24 PM This is what the back of a 2gen looks like Bedlined. Forgive the lame sub...
Also where it looks like I painted over rust like a jack as, is infact dirt from some old boots :D
http://www.blazerforum.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=338&pictureid=2065
oisinirish 06-05-2009, 12:45 PM How well does it work as a sound barrier??
ABN31B 06-05-2009, 01:09 PM Funny you should ask. I drove around for almost 2 months with just a driver's seat and seat belt in my cab. NOTHING else, not even a radio... You would not believe how loud road noise actually is...
Anyway, now that I have the bedliner down I would say it's comparable to a normal truck with the rear window just barely cracked. Slightly louder than carpet/padding combo, but not by much. When I can get up to my dad's place and use his pressure washer, i will be undercoating my truck, At that point it should be no different to slightly better than factory.
Note, they use this stuff for sub woofer boxes. In fact, I think in the "Audio system install pics" thread there was a guy with a monster box with like 6 12" subs that was bedlined.
So I guess the answer to your question is... erm... Yes?
oisinirish 06-05-2009, 02:48 PM Funny you should ask. I drove around for almost 2 months with just a driver's seat and seat belt in my cab. NOTHING else, not even a radio... You would not believe how loud road noise actually is...
Tell me about it. Mine just has the two front seats in it for now. No carpet...nuttin.
Totally missed the post suggesting it was a good sound deadener..:o
ABN31B 06-06-2009, 02:16 AM oisinirish: it's all good :D glad to see there is at least one more Ted Bundy-mobile rolling around...
t.lyttle: How goes this project?
t.lyttle 06-06-2009, 08:27 AM soory so slow to update im in the navy and was out to see this week...i had to order the liner on line im gonna go with red herculiner it should be here on tuesday
ABN31B 06-06-2009, 01:50 PM Nice choice. The red will make your interior look brand new and stand out really well.
livlifes2short 06-15-2009, 09:16 PM Ok so my questions id did this change your road noise at all?better worse the same? Thinking about doing it to my 94 s10 4 door but do not wanna not have the comfort of windows up air on nice ride (within reason ) with the exception of the rear pass door and hatch window squeaking to high heaven! And secondly what about wiring how do you run it keep it neat and clean ? Thanks Looks NICE i wanna see it with the color you plan to do !
**** Ha guess I should read a little more before I just go posting away. So never mind the first question but what about the wiring issue!
and second that could you line the inside panels like the rear quarter panels?
ABN31B 06-15-2009, 10:00 PM ok for the wiring issue, i cut the old looming and streched the wires as much as I could. i re-taped and loomed and ran all side-to-side wire under the front seats and through the center console.
as far as the wires that ran from front to rear, I had to run them along the floorboard on the back driver's side floor board, but was able to run them under the trim from the rear seat all the way to the hatch. the only spot the looming shows is from under the driver's seat to the rear d side seat. with rubber floor mats down you barely even see it really. i can live with it. Shrug
livlifes2short 06-15-2009, 10:13 PM sweet thanks for fsat response, does every one still use floor mats I was kinda thinking this would eliminate the need for them? Thanks
NVANZEE 06-15-2009, 10:20 PM wow i really like that. I can see that in my truck in the near future. About how much did it cost ya? Was it fairly easy to do?
t.lyttle 06-16-2009, 05:47 PM ok ive been out to sea so i havent had the chance to get this updaqted i have the liner now but not red they were sold out so im gonna stick with black my plan is to finish this weekend....im gonna do all the rest of the prep work during the week...but yes i will keep floor mats mainly for looks....
amazinnblazin 06-19-2009, 07:31 PM sweet can't wait to see it done. And thanks to you and everyone else who is serving for our country!
