View Full Version : smoked out turn signals
Deezy Steez 10-05-2009, 10:19 PM ive looked at smoke headlight covers to match my tails, but havent been able to find smoked signal covers. my 98 ls has the seperate signals bellow the headlights and id love to black them out to go with the truck. anyone know where to get the covers, and/or whether theyre legal for day/night use as the headlight covers are not?
Each state differs. You'd have to look into your local motor vehicle laws. The only one I've ever seen with covers on the front is JST4SHO. Most people tint their lights with a can of VHT Night Shades. It's a spray on tint.
CraigSnedeker 10-06-2009, 08:00 AM Reading state laws is like reading the writtings of a mad man haha ... I tried reading the section about smoking lights in NY (found a link on some law site someone was asking) and read it and didn't get heads or tails out of it.
Deezy Steez 10-06-2009, 08:38 AM is the spray tint of decent quality though? like would it run and leave my signals unclean? and where would i get it?

If you do it right it can look really good. Do a search on the forum for tint if you want to see examples of it. There are several thread discussing it. Here is one: http://www.blazerforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=33997&highlight=nightshade
Depending if smoked lights are illegal or not in your state, you should be able to find it anywhere auto paint is sold (parts stores, speed shops, etc.). It should be with the spray paint cans. It looks like this:

You may also want to pick up a can of clear coat to put overtop as the night shade is fairly flat. The clear coat will give it that stock looking shine.

It looks like this, I didn't put any clearcoat on like a lot of guys do though.

Unlimitedsp 10-06-2009, 01:32 PM VHT is the way to go. A few light to medium coats and some clear.
Nathan1991 10-06-2009, 01:36 PM I've seen some smoked corners on ebay now and then, but I think for the most part its a whole new light, not just the cover

You'd probably end up forking out a far about of $$ for all new tails too. A can of VHT does the same thing for $10-$15.
Deezy Steez 10-06-2009, 05:30 PM already got the tails but the orange just doesnt go with the green and black truck lol so ill look in to the smoke cans
Deezy Steez 10-06-2009, 05:47 PM is there a way to remove the orange tint on the front signal? rather than smoking it i would be completely satisfied making it clear? and i know clear is 100 percent legal

Unfortunately no..you'd have to buy all new clear corners. Good news is you can pick a set up on ebay for around $30. Take a look on there.
Deezy Steez 10-06-2009, 11:21 PM just found these

for 100 bucks i think it would set the truck off completely
blazin_j 10-06-2009, 11:37 PM Holy %*$& those are sweet.
I think crb used to have those before he rolled his Blazer....at least he had something similar. They look nice though.
Deezy Steez 10-07-2009, 08:21 AM shippings 72 bucks to my area though

In that case..not so nice lol. I remember seeing really cheap clear corners on ebay somewhere. Keep looking, you should be able to find something a little more reasonable.
I've been thinking seriously about these:

The chrome ones.
Not quite as cheap, but when you factor in shipping, not too bad.
xCHIPx 10-08-2009, 01:16 AM I did mine with the VHT night shades and it turned out good just make sure you clean the houseing really good before you paint it. But as far as covers I know summit sells a set for the headlights and bumperlights. I was goin to get the covers but dont wana pay alot for covers and someone just steel them.
okvortec 10-08-2009, 01:26 AM I actually recollect something about baking the lenses so the seal become loose and removing the orange lenses and then reheating them to soften up the seal again and then stickin em' back together. Don't remember where I read about it though.
Edit - Now that I think about it, my buddy did it with his Grand Prix

You can do these with S10's as well, but it was only a certain style. There is a how-to over on s10forum I read way back when, but I can't remember the specifics of it now. Either way I'm pretty certain you can do it on 98+ models
BTW - Check out what my buddy dropped off last night. Going to be doing it this weekend :D

butters 10-08-2009, 06:41 PM i have that stuff on my tails, headlights, and bumper directionals along with the ones next to the headlights. looks great works great. does say on the can that it is for offroad use or show use only though but if you do it right the light goes through and the cops dont bother to be atleast with me.
You can't even buy it up here...they won't sell it because it's illegal. I know a lot of people with their lights tinted though and they've never had a problem with the cops. The only thing I would suggest is to not tint your headlights lol. You may have a problem with them then.
