View Full Version : Going turbo-
02 Vortech 05-29-2006, 12:29 AM well i like nitrous and the 4.3L loves it but i want power all the time. im changing to a single 60-1 T4 turbo good for 550+ hp (turbonetics). 38mm w/g, Turbosmart BOV, OBX 25x9x3 intercooler.
as far as the fuel system goes. Walbro intank fuel pump, SDEFI extra injector controller w/ 2x 42lbs Bosch injectors supplying enough fuel for over 350whp which is my goal.
i only have the turbo right now. i am debating on selling the nitrous in order to get some money, but then i will be w/ out power for a long time- i love nitrous but if i can make more hp safer on the boost im gonna do it. + it will give you guys some enticment once i hit the 300whp. i am gonna do a long right up and take alot of pictures- it total should come out to about $1700- only have costs for parts @ $1500 but i threw in an extra $200 for misc crap. im doing all the fabrication my self.
It will be a 2.5" custom y-pipe run straight to the turbo. its an STS "style" the turbo will be alot closer to the engine than sts kits. run back up to the intercooler which i hope will be mounted in the front grill. or i might mount it underneath like the machperformance turbo kits. then up to the bonnet with a custom bonnet hat and the two injector approx 10 inches from the TB- i will later on get a cfm-tech bored TB but i will wait considering its another $300.
should start prefabbing bye the end of the summer
goal is- 350whp and 400ft.lbs
jagblazer01 05-29-2006, 06:26 PM so your going to fabricate your own turbo manifold?
m00nwater 05-30-2006, 09:23 AM Nice...I can't wait to see your write ups. Maybe by then we'll have our how to section and you can put it in there.
swartlkk 05-30-2006, 10:15 AM That is going to be awesome!
Are you going to be doing anything in the block? or atleast a different upper intake plenum? I do not know if the stock plastic upper intake plenum can handle all that much pressure... From what I understand, the newer 4.3L (2004-05) have an all aluminum intake setup that still uses a compatible injection setup, but I have never seen one.
The reason why I ask about the bottom end is because I don't know how well an 9.5:1 compression ratio will take to higher boost levels. A set of lower compression pistons (8.5:1 to 9.0:1) would do much better under boost conditions.
Do you have some place already in mind to tune the PCM? Are you staying with the stock PCM or going with an aftermarket FMU with different injection system?
Sorry for the onslaught of questions, but I am very interested in your project! Good luck with it and keep us posted on the progress (with pics!)!!!
SniperX13 06-02-2006, 10:56 PM wow, seems like a very monumental undertaking. I too look forward to seeing this, hopefully, I can use some of the tips on my engine, since they just a tad bit different :)
02 Vortech 06-04-2006, 02:37 PM its actually gonna be an STS style turbo set-up. today im taking the whole front of the truck apart to get measurment it hard becasue i got a full time job, and school starts up in about two months. im having a hard time with turbo selection right now. im going sts because trtt turbos did a custom sts turbo on a blazer and @ 3.8 psi made 210whp and 270ft.lbs., that was on STOCK everything. NOthing else done to the truck.
i will be running methanol for some time with a vortech FMU and walbro intank fuel pump and AEM wideband. having a hard time deciding where to put the intercooled, either under the truck back next to the driveshaft with an e-fan on top, or on the front undereath the truck...... i will be running the piping under the the top of driver side fender its gonna be clsoe but i can fit a 3" pipe in there after soem measurments where taken. I am trying to do this so everyon can do a set-up like this. im on a budget, my money for this project is $1300 including turbo/intercooler/wastegate/oil pump and everything. looking for 300whp @ 10psi now which will be much safer and should put me around 400ft.lbs, then i will be throwing a 2800 to 3000 stall torque converter and an eaton posi with 3.73's and see if can hit low low low 13's. also gonna get a pcm for less base tune and then get a dynotune-
btw this is on stock bottom end/cam/valve train/ heads. i will have 1.6rr's put in but i really need some valve springs so i can run the rpms up higher- as for the bottom end a guy with a procharger set-up has hit 400whp and 400ft.lbs totally stock bottom end so i think my goals are very doable and not out of reach.
got to get back to removing the fenders :) keep yall updated
o yeah- for the fuel injection i will converting a 2114 intake manifold to a mpfi set-up with 60lbs injectors on it so i can run as much boost as i want. but that far in the future as well as a 270ah custom grind cam, nice head work, cryo'd crank and new pistons.
VRDriver4l 06-04-2006, 10:28 PM Thats some awsome **** right there! Gotta love the boosted blazer. And damn that is pretty cheap for the hole set up, is this all from companies or do you have some connection on parts? Either way good luck and hope you get it purrin like a kitten!

no im using a used t3/t4 50-trim turbo- $250
intercooler / BOV / piping / couplers / fmu / fuel pump - EBAY :)
tial wastegate $200
doing everything myself is gonna be the big money saver-
getting a tune from hellsbent over on s10forum for a base tune then getting dyno tuned
VRDriver4l 06-05-2006, 11:48 PM Roger that, can't wait to see the finished product!!
jagblazer01 06-06-2006, 12:49 AM u gonna be running an aftermarket ecu? maybe like an aem or something

nope sending my ecu out next weekend to hellsbent10 over on s10forum for a turbo base tune just to get it running. I will be running the FMU and methanol for tuning and an AEM WIDEBAND A/F guage. i will be running the intercooler between the frame rails under the truck with a small scoop welded on to it and might through a small e-fan on it.
jagblazer01 06-06-2006, 11:26 PM very nice man....sounds like you are going to have an incredible truck on ur hands. keep us posted
02 Vortech 06-10-2006, 08:07 PM the turbo is a T3/T4 from my friends 3SGTE build on his MR2- he made 406whp on it until he maxed it out. Since my goal is 320 to 330whp on boost it should be very good.
The turbo is a Garrett product, profesionally balanced, no shaft play, clipped, ported and spooled @ 2600 on his 2.0L 4cyl so i figure on my 4.3L is should SPOOL IMMEDIATLY which is a good thing. it still has a 1 year warranty on it so i think i got a good deal on it. paying $250 for it.
ordering 2.5" exhaust building kit maybe 2 of them, turbo xs 38mm wastegate, cartech fmu and walbro fuel pump tonight as well as GETTING all of my fluids changed to royal purple :) :)
VRDriver4l 06-12-2006, 08:42 PM Not that i know much about oils but my pops has worked at mac tools for almost 20 years and they had a hole station at one of there tool fairs testing all the different kinds of oils and Amsoil always came out on top for every category. Im pretty sure from what my mechanic says also you can go to there website and they have proof of how there oil is better than all the competitors. Just what i have heard and seen and thought mabye you might wanna take a look at it i have always used it and its a great product.
1996BZR 06-13-2006, 12:06 AM [8D]Great to see someone putting a turbo on these instead of supercharger. There's so much more power available in a turbo. Good luck.

lol i got a turbo for sale....to bad u already got one...mine may be a little big for ur goals anyway
use it on yours.
O yeah i got some basline figures 2day guys. like 40-70mph, 10-70mph 30-60mph, 60-90mph, i will post those up and then the new numbers and improvments with the boost. these numbers will be with pullies, exhaust, intake, and an msd coil.
jagblazer01 06-13-2006, 03:19 PM lol its a little to big to use on mine....its a t3/gt40 garrett ball bearing turbo. .68 exhaust / .72 compressor capable of 700 HP
02 Vortech 06-13-2006, 06:58 PM omg wow lol.
here is what sparked my intrest. @ 4psi made 208whp and 264ft.lbs WITH NOTHING ELSE DONE NO FUEL MODS- baseline was around 130whp so 80whp on 4psi sounds great 2 me
http://www.s10forum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=218816
and few pics of the turbo :D

jagblazer01 06-16-2006, 12:22 AM so do you have a final cost of everything....cuz this sounds like something id like to look into
02 Vortech 06-17-2006, 07:46 PM its looking liek between $1400 and $1600 for parts. doing all the work my self so that takes out polly another 1k. my buddy has a welder and pipe bender so im bending all the piping my self which will take the cost out but im still gonna get DIY intercoller piping kit just to have nice aluminum peices under the hood. im getting a Cartech adjustable fmu for $100 off a buddy brand new, the turbo was only $250 so that saves me about $350 right there consider the turbo was $500 new and the fmu was $200 new. i would say with a masterpower brand new t3/t4 60 trim turbo and all new parts it would be about 1k. i plan on taking @ least 2 weekend to do this project. sending the ecu out this friday.
02 Vortech 07-04-2006, 02:23 AM ECU was sent out last thursday overnighted 2 the tuner's, and should be back this thursday from the tuners for the turbo tune. ordering lots of parts tommorow.
02 Vortech 07-05-2006, 12:38 AM my computer should be back thursday or friday of this week reflashed for a base turbo tune just to get it 2 the dyno. but if the a/f ratio stays good @ 8psi i will hold off on a full dynotune until i get some meth. :D
but
as soon as my check for $900 to my mom clears i will be ordering LOTS OF TUBING,FLANGES, COUPLERS, T-BOLT CLAMPS, my intercooler, BOV, and boostguage.
All thats left to order after that is
AEM wideband-$260
Turbonetics evolution wastegate-$220
Braided hoses-$60 for oil
Oil pump-$150
Fittings and check valves-$100
FMU-$100
and Fuel pump- $100
Bolts and hardware- $100
gonna start prefabricating everything not this weekend but next weekend and cutting holes and what not.
i plan on doing this right the first time so once its on its on and working perfect unlike my nitrous set-up.
BTW!!!!!!!-----
I need a tool that can expand the end of an exhaust tube so it will slip over another tube. anyone know where i can find one of those.
XBlazer01 07-05-2006, 03:48 AM Dude where u plan on mounting the intercooler? Not sure how that would look as a front mount ya know?

still waiting on ecu to come in.
02 Vortech 07-12-2006, 12:32 AM ecu came in last friday. runs fine. shifts better, no speed limiter, and other ****.
and so i ordered a bunch of **** 2night. BOV, I.C., all the oil lines and fittings except for the oil pump, all of the tubing, clamps, flanges, gaskets. now comes time 2 remove my muffler and send my exhaust tubing 2 an exhaust shop 2 get, W/G. flange, T3 turbo flange, and Wideband 02sensor bungs all welded up, as well as a 20degree bend for some extra clearance on the compressor side. gave her a check for $900, total of all that **** came out 2 $892. Next paycheck is paying for, fuel pump, FMU, Boost guage, oil pump, wastegate, 02sensor :D..... then maybe a few more misc **** and i will have all of the parts 2gether :D

blazerxtreme1 08-18-2006, 05:37 PM just wondering if theres an update??? I really wanna see the finished product!
02 Vortech 09-08-2006, 12:54 AM sorry guys no update in a long time- got the cold side piping finished but my camera broke. just gotta figure out how to mount one of the pipes thats wrangles its way through the engine bay.- i am going this saturday to get it all finished welding, and get the wastegate, and wideband a/f ratio guage bung attached to the exhaust pipe, as well as weld the flange on the end. still waiting on the fuel system, guy still isnt ready to sell so im buying a machperformance fuel pump off another s10forum member and an adjustable cartech fmu from a local guy i know. sorry for the delays. been having some family trouble lately and having to budget my money sparingly. but it will get finished. try and get some pics of the completed cold side piping this weekend. it will all be painted black.
02 Vortech 09-09-2006, 10:07 PM well i got the cold side piping done now and painted i will take pictures 2moro.

yeah well the time 2 beat is 9.39 @ 75mph in the 1/8th mile that was my best time on the nitrous (intake, pullies, 100shot). i was only making 246 whp on the spray and i wanna make righ around 340 to 350whp so i think i will be in the clear for that. hoping to hit real 12.99x with a bigger stall, ford 8.8" and Mickey Thompson D.R.'s and some weight reduction. i might need 2 go to a bigger turbo such as a HX-35 turbo or an T04 60-1 HI-FI turbocharger- http://www.mjmturbos.com/T045870.htm
gonna tune it my self for the time being as i have limited funds right now- tuning will be done with cartech adjustable FMU, machperformance fuel pump, and an AEM wideband- gonna run about 4 or 5 psi daily and 10 to 11 when i find a mustang :D
swartlkk 09-10-2006, 03:50 AM Sounds Great!!!
Have you found out how much pressure the plastic upper plenum can hold down?

Have you found out how much pressure the plastic upper plenum can hold down?
im not using it- im welding an aluminum collar onto the TB then attaching a tight radius 90 degree reducer (3.5" to 2.5")on it so i dont have to worry about it blowing up. silicone FTW-
it will look like this- made 212whp and 265ft.lbs of torque @ the wheels on 4.5 psi. thats what i want to run daily. thats about a 60 to 70whp gain over stock whp numbers- also he is on TOTALLY STOCK FUEL SYSTEM- im running a FMIC so underneath my truck will look totally different-http://www.s10forum.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2899081&postcount=8
swartlkk 09-10-2006, 03:22 PM I'm not talking about the intake ductwork... I'm talking about the plastic upper plenum (below the TB). Now only would I be concerned about it's structural integrity with that kind of boost, but there are various things that are only pressed (not retained) into the plastic upper plenum.
The Marine spec 4.3L v6 may have an aluminum upper plenum, but I have only ever seen one picture of it on the net. You may want to call around to some Mercruiser dealers and see if they can look it up. That way you can really put the screws to the turbo and let it huff big!

it is good to @ least 14psi. i will only run 11 to 12 max. i am looking into a syclone lower and upper intake plenum..........not sure yet though. i might buy it and then instead routing the piping back up to the otehr side of the engine bay swap to a water to air intercooler. not sure yet. there is also the iddea of converting the edelbrock 2114 carburater intake manifold to a mpfi set-up they do it all the time on s10forum.com. i might go that way. but if i can get a 4.3L marine intake for under 1k with injectors/rails i will go that route.
swartlkk 09-10-2006, 04:39 PM Yeah, the mpfi setup w/ a carb'd intake sounds like it would be the best setup. Then you can run the injectors you want as well (plus get them flow matched - crucial to any forced induction motor at high rpm).
How do you know that the intake can handle 14psi? I'm not trying to question your knowledge, just trying to help so that no one ends up blowing their intake plenum.
02 Vortech 09-10-2006, 05:06 PM its been done more than once before. couple guys have run 14+psi on procharger set-up and such. we will see. the upper intake is like $30 i may buy an extra one just incase. :D
or with the sy/ty lower intake manifold i could send it to raceprovenmotors.com and get it converted to fit vortec heads- only $450 so maybe........ hmmmmm....

02 Vortech 09-11-2006, 08:20 PM w00t some progress- just sent out my checks for the cartech adjustable FMU, and machperformance inline fuel pump- as soon as it stop raining im gonna go put a second coat of engine paint on the cold side :D- fuel system should be here bye next tuesday and it will be installed as soon as i get it done.
my digital camera stoped working so its a no-go on the pictures, sorry guys im gonna try and borrow a friends- also gonna go ahead and wire the oil pump-
QUESITON-
would it be okay to wire the oil pump and inline fuel pump to the same relay- they are bost supposed to come on @ the same time so it should be okay correct?
swartlkk 09-11-2006, 09:13 PM I would run two separate relays using the same trigger for both, but running separate fused links to the battery.

yes boost stock intake plenum its fine- machperformance.com hit 360whp on the stock plenum and spider injection with a procharger fmu and fuel pump- which i am using
offroaddude77 10-04-2006, 09:04 AM mach isnt using a stock spider thats y i asked.

swartlkk 10-22-2006, 12:45 PM Looks great... What else do you want? Oh I know... n/m...
How does it run? You haven't even done a rundown on things... A review of how it's running would be nice. You might get more interest if there is more information. You stated 4+ days ago that you were going to the dyno in 2 days.... Did that happen? What did it pull? Have you had it tuned for 8psi yet?...

yeah i know i couldnt get 2 shop in time 2 get my TB welded thus no dyno- have it scheduled for tuesday for 8psi- getting dyno numbers- it runs great- drives like stock until i get into it- getting 21mpg @ the least the first two full fill ups- its reliable- does fine in the rain- i have moved the filter above the frame rail so its different then last time-
jagblazer01 10-22-2006, 08:42 PM dude the video is awsome....cant wait to see some numbers from the tuning and bumping up the boost:D
EkStreem G 10-22-2006, 10:03 PM Wow, it sounds nice as sh**! It's about time you get that grille back on....lol. Wut are gonna do about that turn signal/I.C. piping clearance problem?
02 Vortech 10-24-2006, 04:24 PM those corner lights still work- i just had to notch them 2 fit the intercooler piping i still think it looks great :D im gonna take alot of picture of the underside of the truck 2day- i will post them up in about an hour- get an idle video and some other stuff- over time i will give you the pro's and cons- and then the kit will be up for sale sometime next year- i will be refining it through out the time it is on the truck- im buying a 5.3L gonna put LS6 heads on, G5X3 turbo cam, 8.5:1 compression, GT76 turbo, intercooled, th400transmission- gonna be a monster- wanna turn it into a supra slayer :D

Your setup turned out pretty good... i like it. However Mach's #'s are wrong. When mach ran his blazer the turbo was WAY to small. He has changed the setup on that blazer like 4 times. Mach is local for me, he tuned my blazer, and is helping us with our hopefully 1000 h.p. syclone build. I will p.m. u the rest i dont want what im going to say getting in to the wrong hands...
02 Vortech 10-25-2006, 11:13 AM sounds good- the stock block can only handle 400whp usually tune has to be perfect- hes making more hp now on a bigger turbo? how big was the turbo he was on @ 360whp?
offroaddude77 10-25-2006, 11:28 AM yeah Katech is build our motor and block. http://www.katechengines.com/katech_inc/
i dont know what those numbers are from, Maybe his twin turbo setup, he doesnt say. He is making more Now tho.

there is a guy on s10forum making 402whp on stock spider- hes using the procharger FMU and inline fuel pump- so im not to worried- i will try and max out the 4.3L once i get ready for the 5.3L swap- see if she can take 400+whp for a while....
offroaddude77 10-25-2006, 01:10 PM yeah u will be fine as long as u have enough pressure which u do probably so ur good, also as long as ur spider isnt one of the defective ones like mine is and needs to be replaced.
02 Vortech 10-25-2006, 05:39 PM GOT DYNO'D @ 8psi
Most runs where @ the 245whp mark and i had to @ 255whp- @ 8psi-10.5:1 a/f ratio
255.5 whp @ 10.5:1 a/f ratio
327 Ft.lbs @
MODIFCATIONS OTHER THEN THE TURBO AND TURBO TUNE-
msd coil-
NGK TR6 plugs-
March underdrive pullies-
thats it----
its a dynodynamics dyno- he said that it dyno's 5% lower then a dynojet so hopefully next time i dyno which will be on a dynojet i will make around 270whp @ 340ft.bls- but thats later- im definatly happy with the results-
it lights up the tires from a 20punch- thing is i have to hold it in gear for the 1/2 shift- because it dumps to much fuel through the **** and it boggs like a mother- so when i hold it and let it stop spining it hits the 2nd gear shift spins another 10ft and is off like a rocket- its hard to launch definatly-
dyno/burnout video and pictures will be up in about an hour
swartlkk 10-25-2006, 06:04 PM Awesome man! Good Job!

What's with the dip in the dyno sheet?
its the shift-
swartlkk 10-25-2006, 09:52 PM Hmm. Any dyno I've ever witnessed had the vehicle locked in 2nd... I can lock my truck or car in 2nd with my scan tool, so I'd imagine they'd be able to do it as well... You shouldn't have a shift in a dyno run...

im sorry that "hole" is where the dyno guy hit the button when he let off the brake on the dyno.
here is the video-

02 Vortech 10-28-2006, 12:58 AM I RAN IN THE 1/8TH MILE ITS OUR ONLY LOCAL TRACK-
8.8 @ 77mph-
1.96 60ft.- no spining just up and went-
THIS IS ON 8LBS OF BOOST AND 30" TALL TIRES (heavy as hell)
boost launch 8lbs- hammer it right before i let off the brake and right after the 3rd light turns on- and ended up with that- ran a 9.2 @ 76mph with a 2.3 60ft when i launched @ 4psi and bogged
realestkilla420 09-24-2009, 11:22 PM try to find manifolds from a syclone or a typhoon they were the gmc and chevy blazers with 4.3 and they were turbocharged i ebayed the manifolds around 800 for them
UR50SLO 09-28-2009, 08:23 AM What are you using for tuning? Should not be having boggs off the line or on a shift.
This is a 2dr 2wd?
What intake/injectors?
How much timing and AFR under WOT..
Sounds like the tune is what is keeping it from running decent. Should be making alot
more mph/et with that light of a truck.

oktain 09-28-2009, 09:50 PM I don't think it really matters anymore, 02vortech blew his motor and hasn't been active since 2006-2007.

the Syclone and Typhoon's were GMC only, no Chevy's were made. i know they're the same truck (GMC/Chevy) just correcting who it was that released the killer trucks.
UR50SLO 09-29-2009, 11:53 AM I didn't realize that this was a dug up thread.. sorry!
Our Sy/Ty exhaust manifolds/Marine intake setup has almost 30,000mi on it now and
165,000mi on stock engine.

I was reading up on 02 Vortec the other day and watching the videos. I didn't know he blew his motor lol. That sucks.

Scott, is your set-up similar to 02vortec's? 'cause as i was reading this thread, i was thinking, "why wouldn't you just run the same set-up as in the Syclone/Typhoon's?". but then i got to thinking, there less room under there, than in the 1st gen trucks. either that, or my arms have gotten bigger, hahahaha.
I was reading up on 02 Vortec the other day and watching the videos. I didn't know he blew his motor lol. That sucks.
yeah, i was gonna ask oktain how he knew 02vortec puked the engine, since he hasn't been on here in such a long time.
UR50SLO 09-29-2009, 05:50 PM No... Mine is stock vortec engine.. Marine intake and Sy/Ty turbo/mflds ect.
See the entire build and info on how to do it here:

Brett posted it in one thread about some guy wanting to turbo his Blazer. 02Vortech was the only guy known to the forum with the rear-mount setup, and he said he puked it.
He didn't run the sy/ty setup just because of $$$ restrictions.
Unlimitedsp 09-30-2009, 10:41 AM I know there was someone else on here that had a typhoon setup on there 2nd gen. I'll have to find it
old skool luvr 09-30-2009, 11:32 AM I know there was someone else on here that had a typhoon setup on there 2nd gen. I'll have to find it
that would be great to see. i gonna make my '92 Jimmy in to a 4 door version, but i couldn't find a 4WD 5 spd that would handle the power, and gave up on it. it woulda been sick, i had the front and rear bumpers, was in the process of stretching the side flares to fit the 4 door, definately would've been a "one off".
on another note Unlimitedsp, did you get my PM the other day? i haven't heard from you.........
