So here's the poll.

just like the name says: 2wd baby. Thats all you need to fight the colorado snow on the highway is a decent set of tires, about 200lbs of weight in the bed, and nerves of steel.
(I'm going to the junk yard to get a G80 Posi rear diff today) I just dont do enough off roading to own a 4wd. Now on the other hand if I HAD a 4wd, oh the places I would go.......

My parents had two 1999 S series vehicles, one a 2wd truck the other a 4x4 blazer, they both sucked. I have a 92 4x4 T-10 blazer and It works great for what it is, it wont handle alot of stuff off road but i really dont push it.

I wouldn't have bought it without 4 wheel drive! I don't understand why anyone would want to buy an SUV without 4 wheel drive?

swartlkk
01-21-2007, 06:31 PM
The reasoning behind buying a 2wd SUV is quite simple. Its personal preference for that type of vehicle, without the need for 4wd. Some prefer the body style, but don't live where snow is a concern and possibly do not ever want to tread off pavement. There are numerous reasons.

Currently driving my 4x4 Blazer... However, it's only used 4x4 for... "extra curricular" activites, in normal, everyday driving, 2wd is more than enough... as long as you have the weight, tires, and ground clearance... Heck, acceleration wise, my old S-10 (2wd, open diff) whoops my Blazer in the snow/ice because it had better tires...

Good for you. I'm a college student and i needed a car. When i finally found a blazer i liked and could afford, it was 2wd...big deal! I don't remember ever seeing the contract stating a truck has to be 4wd unless it's made to be fast.

I live in NC, hardly ever any snow, lots of mud but thats what my dad's jeep is for, no big rocks. Having a 4wd blazer here is pointless. I use mine for everyday driving conditions soits 2wd all the way. AND with gas nearing $2.50 a gallon now, with a 2wd, that extra mile on the gallon makes a big difference.

4x4 For sure. I wouldn't consider buying a 2WD SUV. This reminds me of a "game" we used to play back home. We would take my friend 2WD Chevy 1500 and drive throught the woods with it trying to get it stuck and then come along and pull it out with another friends 4x4 2500. A lot of my favorite stories start with us playing that game.

2WD. Don't need a 4x4 here in Fresno,Cali unless you go up to the snow/mountains, which I only do one in a blue moon and even then there is the snow chain/cable option plus better MPG's in 2WD!!!

4wd. Had quite a few from Ford's to Toyota's to Jeeps and Chevy's. All good.

I have 2 4x4's a 96 Blazer and a 94 Sonoma, up here in NY you need them. I couldn't live with out them. They are fantastic in the snow and slush. Our road here is the last to get plowed in the winter and as my driveway has a slight incline on it, its super for getting in the driveway with a foot of new snow on. I used to have a 95 2wd Blazer and it was useless off the pavement.

I don't mean to step on any toes but isn't 4x4 the pointof buying a truck/suv?! I mean I guess it depends on your tastes but jeez!!!! My favorite thing is to take my truck some placea vehiclehas no business being and making that place my bitch! Couldn't do it with 2wd that's for damn sure!

Some people actually use their trucks & SUV's for carrying or pulling cargo, and for hauling people as well ;)

I somewhat agree with slick, I would not buy a truck unless it is a 4X4. However I live in Minnesota and the extra traction comes in handy some days. That being said, 98% of my driving doesn't have the front wheels engaged.

A good set of studded winter tires is all anybody needs :D

Though a limited slip or locking diff is a nice bonus :)

My old 2WD '85 S10 (with an open diff, and non-studded tires) easilly made its way through 2 - 3 feet of snow.

I've only used my 4x4 for unstucking other people [8D]

I bought a Blazer mainly to tow my camping trailer. I don't intend to tow off road, and the need for 4WD in southwestern Ohio is minimal. On the four days in the past two years where 4wd would really help, I just fired up the Tracker and drove it.

hm, quick question... what is the criteria? I mean, if you own a 2wd truck (like a silverado), and a 4wd Blazer, or vice versa, does that count?

I can't vote yet, but my truck is 2wd and the BOMBLAZER is 4x4, so just wondering.

Gotta' be 4X4. I have too much fun pulling the 4X2 trucks out of the snow!! Even better when its a 1500 series and my 'lil' Blazer pulls 'em out! Mud, snow, ice...after 13 years my 4X4 has never left me stuck.

Part time 4WD with low range option all the way. Most of the new unibody SUVs with AWD are no good for offroad or towing. The Jimmy is a solid vehicle with the body on frame design. After getting the Jimmy, I will probably never buy a sedan or any 2WD or AWD vehicle. 4WD is SO good to have in the snow or if I am camping in a remote location where the paths are in bad condition. I've gotten it stuck a few times in mud (hidden because of tall grass) after a rainstorm. All I do is put it in neutral (to take the strain off the transfer case so it will go in without a hitch), press 4HI or 4LO, put it in 1 and drive out of it as if I was on pavement.

4 Wheel drive, although until I go to the auto parts store and buy a 4" piece of vacuum line its stuck in 2Wd.
I'll never own a truck again in my life that is made as a 2 wheel drive, the only 2 wheel drive I have ever seen thats worthey was a 1976 Chevy C-10 with a 350 4Brl in it.

i have a 2wd that i plan to lift (i like the look). i live in michigan where we get a lot of snow, and i have no trouble whatsoever. granted i have allterrain tires, but i've never gotten stuck, and ive been in deep. so would i like to have 4x4, yes of course. but #1: no money. #2: dont really need it. i think if you have a good driver in a 2wd and a not so great driver with 4x4, the good driver will still do better (at least in snow) idk about mud and all that

I've driven out of things w/ 2wd that people in 4x4 got stuck in. I'm a firm believer that the driver makes the difference. a machines just a machine. do you need it for bogging halfway up your doors? yeah, but do most of us do that?

No offense to any 2wd owners but if you live in Canada you NEED a 4x4 Blazer. 2wd rwd in the snow here is just silly :)

not true Smoked, my '92 (which i bought in late '96) was the first 4WD vehicle i had, and i managed to get my other RWD vehicles outta of everything i ever went through-and that was pretty much what ever i came across in my path!

I am sorry to say... and I don't want to hurt anybody's feeling... and everybody has a right to their opinions... and I am sure those people are great persons and all... and that God created men equally............... first things first can4_life, you don't have to have 4WD if you own a SUV. my '90 'Burb is just fine being a 2WD. besides. when the tires tuck way up in the fender's, you don't want to leave the pavemant for the mud & rocks.
that being said, i luv my 4X4's for the mud & snow playing.
IMO, if it's 2WD, it should be down low. if it's 4WD, then it should be getting dirty on a regular basis.

2003 Trailblazer LST EXT, BIG, GREY, (2H, 4H, AWD, 2L, I use as needed, whether we have ice, snow or slop), 104 000 kms, (translate if you must... that's 65,000 US miles... lol), leather interior, (oh, heck... it has the works, but no sunroof... I didn't want a sunroof! And we don't say roof like hoof, we say roooooooof, as in "too"... "too sweet!"

But, back on topic, or Kyle will shut down the newbie! Interestingly enough, I was researching the Trailblazer and found out it has one of the worst reviews!! However, I would not give up my Trailblazer for love nor money!! I love that darn SUV, I have found it to be extremely reliable and my dealership is absolutely exceptional!! I bought it brand new in 2003 and their still giving me $9.95 oil changes! Can't beat that!

I used to have a 89 Scotsdale 3/4 ton, pullover off the side of the road. was just after the ice thawed to try for some eirly Carppie. When i went to leave i found the ground frozen about 2" below the surface, and i was stuck. in 2" of mud. At that moment i vowed i would never own another truck unless it was 4X4.

i have 2wd. i don't go off roading (except in the grassy parking lots of little league baseball diamonds) i throw 200lbs of sand in the trunk and i do just fine in the snow. I drive 30 miles a day to school then 30 back, in those 60 miles, the only trucks i see in the ditch are the 4x4s who went flying by me 5 minutes ago. So, imo 2wd ftw!!

just messing with you guys, its by choice, 2wd is what i was taught to drive in and what i teach others to do so in (buddies from down south have no idea what to do in the snow/icy 3-4 months of winter Michigan has)
