View Full Version : NO BRAKES!!!
Chevyguy032 02-13-2007, 05:08 PM Ok well got the truck onthe road today..got the new (used rear) but when I went to ake it for a drive I notcied my brakes are horrible..the pedal goes straight to the floor..I didnt disconnect any brake lines in the process of changin the rear so i dont need to bleed the system...but when i did drive the truck to my shop in school the axles walked out on me and the drum separated from the brake assembely and i hit the brake when i saw that..could my wheel cylinder have jus blown up??but there was no brake fluid leaking from the cylinders or anything so im lost...
4lowlife 02-13-2007, 05:25 PM Do any rear end work lately? Sounds like a C clip went awol. The drum may fall off if there is no wheel on, and no lugs installed. Where the shoes installed correctly?
I can't fathom what else could casue this.
Chevyguy032 02-13-2007, 05:33 PM the axles walked out on the odl rear when i blew it not the new (used rear)
4lowlife 02-13-2007, 05:39 PM ok, the old rear end, I see. Is there vaccum? (brake boost)
Chevyguy032 02-13-2007, 05:45 PM ill have tocheck..i didnt disconnect any lines in the process of swapping the rears..but when a wheel cylinde blows will there be brake fluid leakingeverywhere?? becuase i think thats what the problem might be the i dont got any fluid leaking anywhere so i dont actualy know if the cylinders went or not..
4lowlife 02-13-2007, 05:54 PM yes there would be brake fluid if they go.
Chevyguy032 02-13-2007, 06:05 PM yea i think the brakes need adjusting then..cause the left rear self adjuster is jammed up so i am just going to replace that and see if it helps any..
4lowlife 02-13-2007, 06:48 PM All nice n rusty? always common. Might as well get a whole new hardware kit. Goods luck this weekend.
Chevyguy032 02-13-2007, 09:32 PM great now my parking brake dosent work...
Chevyguy032 02-15-2007, 04:36 PM just off the top of anyone's head do i have to take all the springs off the rear breaks to get out the self adjusters or could i take them off without taking all of it apart..
swartlkk 02-15-2007, 04:53 PM I believe that you can remove them without pulling the springs, but I can't remember ever removing them without the springs... LOL
Chevyguy032 02-15-2007, 05:40 PM would the brakes needing adjusted cause the parking break to not work?
JustBlaze! 02-15-2007, 06:56 PM It depends on the condition of your shoes and drum. From what I understand, your rear brakes and parking brake are activated by 2 separate systems. Regular brakes (ie. via brake pedal) are hydrolic, whereas your parking brakes utilize a mechanical cable. However, both operate the same shoes on the same drum. So I guess if your brake shoes or drum was really worn neither brakes would work. Also, if your shoes were also not adjusted (you said your self adjusters were siezed up), then the shoes might not be expanding far enough to cause the necessary amount of friction with the drum for your brakes to work.
I have found that the easiest way to test if your brake shoes are expanding far enough to have good contact with the drum would be to raise the back of your truck so that both rear tires are above the ground. Put the truck in neutral and try to spin the back tires with your hand, they should spin freely. Then apply the parking brake and try to spin them again with your hand. You should have a much more difficult time turning them, if you can even turn them at all. If you can still spin them easily, then your shoes are not expanding far enough and may need adjustment / replacement.
Hope this helps. Let us know what you find out.
Chevyguy032 02-15-2007, 08:03 PM yea the shoes still have alot of life left on them..so im guessing it just needs adjustment..ill let you know when i bring it to my shop class and change the adjusters
FieroGuy9890 02-16-2007, 03:13 AM Yeah I'm also in an automotive class at school, if your adjusters are not working then that could easily be the cause for your rear brakes and parking brakes not to work. But your front brakes should still work okay and still slow the truck fairly well. Although you won't have as good of braking as you would will all 4 wheels working properly. Try changing the adjusters and getting everything adjusted correctly. hopefully that fixes your problem, if not you may have to consider bleeding your brakes anyway just incase some air found a way into your system. Have you checked the fluid level in the master cylinder?
20Blazer00 02-16-2007, 04:17 AM Well check all the usual suspects fluid level in master cylinder. Also even though you did not remove anything from the lines it is always a good safety measure to bleed the brakes any time you do something related to them, especially R&R a rear differential. It is also possible that whether realizing it or not there might be a kink in the metal lines running across the differential if they were not carefully removed and supported while the diff's were swapped.
Chevyguy032 02-20-2007, 11:41 PM Ok changed the adjuster..now brakes woerk like they did before and got the parking break back..so i am happy
JustBlaze! 02-21-2007, 10:59 AM Glad to know you have you brakes back.
