View Full Version : which hood? Blazer_Xtreme 03-26-2007, 03:50 PM Im looking into buying a aftermarket hood for my truck an I was wonderin if I should go with either the steel or the fiberglass and what are the pros and cons of each. Thanks alot TripleBlackBlazer 03-26-2007, 04:53 PM I've only done a little bit of research but here's what I know. Steel: Pros- 99% of the time it's a direct bolt-on. Superior quality. Longetivy. Won't crack or tear. Can use stock hardware. Cons- Cost. Weight. Higher shipping due to weight. Links I have found for steel hoods: 4" cowl lift off - http://www.eharwood.com/catalog/product.php?productID=386 2.5" cowl bolt-on - http://www.eharwood.com/catalog/product.php?productID=426 4" cowl bolt-on - http://www.eharwood.com/catalog/product.php?productID=427 Fiberglass: Pros - Lightweight. Price-significantly cheaper than steel in most cases. Wider variety of shapes IMO. (I've really only seen cowl hoods in steel). More availabilty IMO (ebay and such). Cons - Usually not a direct bolt-on and require some shaping/sanding/filling. Easier to crack/tear than steel. Have to buy different hood latch and springs for some since stock springs are too strong. Fiberglass flexes more than steel. I guess this is for both but it seems you have to be sure of the seller a little more frequently with fiberglass than you do with steel. Links I have found for fiberglass hoods: http://www.extremecomposites.com/chevy.html (http://www.extremecomposites.com/chevy.html%C2%A0) (I'm also fiddling with the idea of their Corvette tailgate but it just seems too crowded) http://www.teamxenon.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=XC&Category_Co de=CHEVY_TRK_6 http://up22.com/S10.htm#GM804 I can't tell if this is steel or fiberglass but the price would suggest that it's 'glass: http://www.truckn-store.com/product.asp?returnURL=default.asp&ID=93255 Hope this helps! (Can ya tell I want a hood too? I'm most likely gonna go with the 4" steel cowl bolt-on when the cash comes in) lastcoupe 03-26-2007, 10:39 PM Get ahold of Goodmark Industries....1-piece steel...is the only way to go IMO. Blazer_Xtreme 03-27-2007, 03:58 PM Thanks ALOT guys I knew I could count on this forum forsomr help. rabbit0102030 03-27-2007, 10:06 PM I like this one: http://www.truckn-store.com/productImages/HOO-CV8293.JPG or those SS Camaro style fiberglass hoods. I think I'm gonna go with the SS for my truck. Jigg 03-27-2007, 10:08 PM Definitely go steel. Fiberglass tends to crack where steel would just bend. I'm partial to this hood: http://i98.photobucket.com/albums/l278/FobyFo247/Winchedon%2003-24-07/101_1551.jpg rabbit0102030 03-27-2007, 10:12 PM Isn't that the SS Camaro style? Is that steel or fiberglass? I have only seen them in fiberglass. lastcoupe 03-27-2007, 10:21 PM I think that is a Goodmark STEEL "ram-air" style hood here (http://www.goodmarkindustries.com/grphx/Accessories%20Photos/4113-200-943%20COLOR.jpg)is a link. rabbit0102030 03-27-2007, 10:24 PM That looks like the one, but I guess the one I was looking at was different. It was called an SS style and it was fiberglass. I like the fact that this one is steel though, so I may be going with it instead.... Jigg 03-27-2007, 10:29 PM Yeah, it's a goodmark Gen III steel hood. Just put it on this weekend. blazinloud 03-27-2007, 10:47 PM sexy! [sm=drooldude.gif] the hoods that is, I would also choose steel. lastcoupe is yours a 2.5"? I've seen a Blazer here with the "ram air" hood.....looked really good. lastcoupe 03-27-2007, 10:50 PM lastcoupe is yours a 2.5"? Yep. Blazer_Xtreme 03-29-2007, 02:13 AM I was lookin at the SS style hood but I only found it in fiberglass from this site https://www.cervinis.com/product.aspx?car=1&id=1132#139but if they make the SS style hood in steel then I would be interested in that, I love the SS style hoods tho it looks really good on the pic Jigg put up.Thanks again guys for the help. |
