Speaking of rust. My blazer had what looked like some minor rust on the rear bumper. I tried sanding it down to bare metal, shot it with primer and then some cheap rattle can black. It came right back, apparently it was worse than I thought.

So I was at the junk yard on Saturday and found a blue bumper already pulled off of a 1999 blazer with very minimal surface rust on the inside and around the bolt holes. So I grabbed it for $20. I hit all the rust with a wire wheel and took it down to bare metal. Then I sanded the rest and primed the entire bumper. I shot the inside with 3 coats of rust-o-leum rubberized undercoating. I will sand the rest to get it smooth and possible re prime if needed and then get it painted black.

Looking good. I just coated my hooks and trailer hookup with a rust stopper (on my build page) as of tonight)

Enjoyed reading thus far

So what I thought was surface rust was my actually rust that had come through from the back. I took the bumper off to get my broken spare tire carrier off. what came out was a ton of rust. I took it off and set it on the ground and it big peices fell out, one of them actually was what I thought was the surface rust on the passenger side. The bar on the driver's side was so gone that the bracket was no longer part of the bumper.

Bottom bracket, no longer part of the bumper

What I thought was surface rust. once the passenger side fell apart I just went at it with a hammer

So I got my bumper primed and painted. However the left side for some reason has weird dimples in it. Somehow I didn't notice it in the primer. I guess it is clear that I am not a body man by an stretch of the imagination. I will hit those with some glazing putty and re shoot that side. All things considered it turned out okay for a rattle can job.

Since my spare tire hoist decided to break last week when I had a flat tire I went to the junk yard and grabbed a working one today for $8.50.

Hit it with a wire wheel and a coat of hammer finish silver. I wanted to do it black but I didn't have any. Not like anyone will ever see it but I wanted to limit the rust any way possible.

Thanks, It did turn out pretty good considering I did very little prep work. I am a big fan of rust-klein hammer finish.

Well I fixed the dimples in my paint with some glazing putty and and filler primer. Unfortunately those stupid license plate lights screwed the paint up around them pretty bad. Whoever designed them needs to be publicly beaten. It took me an hour to get them in and I broke the two that came with the bumper. So I touched up the paint but you can see the gouges that they made and under the driver side one I had a really bad paint run. I may or may not deal with it later. All things considered it turned out okay for a rattle can job.

The hitch and tire carrier turned out okay. I didn't completely take them down to bare metal, but just took off the large scale and did them in hammer finish. The hitch still looks way better and the tire carrier works, so now I have room for groceries. Some of the pictures are washed out because it was very bright outside yesterday.

The bumper looks okay from 15 feet away.

Here is the old bumper. Glad I got my tetanus shot

Did LED license plate lights while I had it all apart.
