"dirt devil" build thread

ok its been a very long time since i updated my page and for good reason i ended up blowing my head gaskets in my original engine so i decided to rebuild a donor engine fron block up.,
heres pulling the original motor out
cleaning the intake manifold
more of the engine tear down
cleaned the heads and added new oil seals
cleaning stage 1 of the valve train
cyl bores still have amazing honeing done. re tapping the cyl head holes
one cyl head on
cyl heads on and torqued. valve train on and oiled up
engine coverd up awaiting parts
intake all assembled
new freeze plugs and oil pump and timing cover
new rear main seal
underdrive pully set
engine all primed
paint the waterpump
almost ready
the engine ran amazing for a month everything was replaced new in the engine except the pistons and main berrings. on the way home on the hwy one day the engine lost power and seized up resulting me being towed home. the engine build cost me 2500 bucksfor all parts and a friends labour. the truck sat at my house for a couple months deciding what i was gonna do with it. i purchased a 2003 ford excursion eddie bauer edition 6.0 deisel and fixed it up as my daily driver. i decided to fix my jimmy as i had a week off work and found a used motor that had 180 000km on it with engine harness. i took it apart and it was clean.

heres the jimmy after my complete over haul to what it is now. decided to get busy and start taking the rebuilt motor out of the jimmy to make way for the donor motor
heres the donor motor all ready to go in.cleaned all the intake and replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor, engine mounts, added my underdrive pully, and new valve colver gaskets and oil pressure sensor,
engine installed and putting it all back togther slowly. did a a/c delete as well
after engine was all hooked up. i had to add all new fluids and reseal the transfer case gasket as well. installed a new driver fender as mine was damaged in the accident i had in the winter and cut a new hole for the snorkle and started the plumbing of it,
got my friend to fab me a snorkle bracket for support
while the jimmy was in the driveway i decided to lube and change all the diff fluids and paint
reassembled
as i seen the truck took some heavy salt damage and rusted the rig out bad causing the frame to get ugly and all the rear quarter panel wheel lips to rust out so decided to clean the frame rails
frame rails all painted
after all the work was done on the jimmy and got it running i cleaned it up before i take it for a test drive
after the clean up i took it for its first road test in my town and all seemed fine til i almost fried this motor pulled over to find a trail of oil behind me. the bolt for the engine oil lines to the oil filter block had stripped out causing the hose to burst leaking oil. had to make a temp fix to get it home,
after i got it home i took the oil filter block out to a local machine shop and had him retap the hole with a helicol repair kit. he charged me 25 bucks for the material and labour and had it installed the next day. after i had it running i gave it another fresh oil change and took it to my friends shop to get the holes in my quarter panel cut out and welded up with fresh metal
hole cut and new patch patel welded up and ground down
it was a 2 day process as it was worse then i thought after i took a screw driver all along the wheel lip and found more rust so we patched it all up.
while i was there i had him make me some small tabs to add rear limit straps so i dont max out my shocks at flex
welded up a bolt for the strap
the following weekend i started to finish the body work. i sanded the fresh metal down, used acid primer and used metal finish bondo to smooth out the roughness. after it was smooth i used duplicolor bedliner with kevlar to add some protection

i decided to drive it around for a few days and felt the trucks suspension and brakes were out of wack and needed to be serviced so i parked the jimmy again and decided to rebuild all the front suspension with custom parts as the factory parts were not holding up anymore
tore all the front apart down to the bare bones.
the rough country control arms were broken and needed to be rewelded and ball joints replaced
new procomp shocks, spicer lower balljoint, cleaned control arms and camber bolts, added alot of antiseize to everything
2x new hub berrings
the start of the custom inner tie rods
the setup of the tie rods compared to the factory
drilled out the end joles on the steering link for the new bolts
almost back together
upper spicer balljoints installed and painted
brakes all serviced and finished product
new 1 ton idler arm assembly and idler arm
heres the start of my custom cognito motorsports pitman and idler arm support brackets. just missing shank nut and heimjoints.
after all the suspension was done i made my custom makeshift washer tank
cleaned and painted my skid plates to match the theme of my truck
installed
truck all cleaned and ready for alighment shop..

What did you do to mount receivers in the front?

Wow great to see this truck back in action, i had seen this truck on kijiji a couple months back and thought it was kind of a shame to sell! Glad you didnt!

well its been along time since ive updated this page and I could never leave my baby alone as its gone through a radical transformation to the point its at now, I have sold the ford excursion since it broke down and cost 3600 Canadian dollors to fix so decided to sink the money back into the jimmy and convert it to a serious offroader that's dependable and reliable.

so my first upgrade was to change the axles since the regular 7.625 axle was weak I found a rear blazer 8.5 axle and decided to rebuild it over winter at a friends. we tore it all down to bare shell and sanded down and painted. installed new parts and a Timken berring set with factory 3;73 gears instead of my 3;43 and added a eaton true track locker. I upgraded the front diff as well to the older style flange cv for easy fixes and it was also rebuilt and a rough country drop bracket was added for better cv angles.
heres the locker it was just surface rust as it sat in a moist garage I cleaned it up with brake clean after and inspected the gears
