Default 1999 4WD problem

I took it to the garage because it just don't work. It's push button, and they don't work.
Well, he said he "thinks" it's what they call a coder motor, after putting it on the tester. He said this part locks and unlocks the 4wd.He also said they were pretty expensive and would look around for one.
My problem is, I called a few auto parts places, and they say they've never heard of a coder motor, but said it sounds like an actuator, because they lock and unlock the 4wd. Upon checking prices, actuators are not that expensive.
I did a search for coder motors, and nothnig comes up! Are they actually a part, or is he just trying to get more money from me?
Please help..
Thanks

encoder motor is what i think you are lookin for.

if its the actuator its simple to check, it is located under the battery.
it is vacuum activated and sometimes the diaphragm rips, or the vac line running to it goes bad.

Thank you.. we'll check the actuator. And we decided to take it to a transmission specialist place for a 2nd opinion before spending too much on it.
The push buttons don't light up anymore either or work.
Thanks again.... your info on both were very helpful.

yeah its an encoder motor and or encoder actuator some places all it that go to napa to get one. i know i got mine for i think $120?? but test the one you have first. just remove your driveshaft from your transfer case, remove the encoder motor its a little tricky but it does come out you need to let it dangle with it hooked to the wire OR you can just tie it up with something. hit the switch if it turns then thats not your problem if its frozen like mine replace it. speaking of 4wd problems. i have searched every thread and cant figure mine out. i have literally done everything and i got it to work again but idk how long it will work for. i had to rip the from differential carrier out (front drive axle out) because i traced it all the way to the front axle now i found that when i took the gears out of the coupler side the coupler only sat in the main gear about 1/2 way to begin with. so when i engaged the 4wd the actuator pulls the coupler to the other gear which is suppose to join both gears together but in actuallity makes mine pull from the main drive gear...so right now i have the cable not hooked up and my 4wd is working beautifully...i just dont know for how long....can someone please help me shed some light on this im stumped and i have searched this thread for no joke WEEKS. except my s10 blazer is a 1992
