88 full size trans same as 93 s10 trans?
hey guys, i bought a 93 s10 4x4 blazer a few months back.got a good deal on it but i was told the trans was going bad, but i havent drivin it and the tags expired now.anyways i got a friend whos about to junk a 88 full size blazer, hes pullin the motor but scraping the rest and i think i could get the trans fairly cheap just in case mine in the 93 is shot.my Q tho is are they the same/ do they match up? the 88 had a 350 while the 93 has the vortec 4.3 but idk if that would make a difference.there both 700r4's with differental cases so it seems like they should interchange but i know thats not always the case.any help is greatly appreciated

i think that he 4.3 had the same bolt up pattern as the small block v8s but im not 100% on that. i do know that the s10 and the full size aswell as the pickups and suburbans all used the same sauto tranny's so it should work.

the trans will fit, but the internals are different. the '93 has more electronics in it.

Yep. That '88 will have the old 700R4 while the '93 was the first year for the 4L60E. The 700R4 is manual control while the 4L60E is electronic. They will not interchange without doing some ECU work so it forgets about the transmission.

ooh ok.yeah my dad had a 91 blazer we pulled the trans in which had the 7004r , so i figured they all had 700r4s in them, but guess not.i got a 95 camaro z28 trans (4l60e) but theres no transfer case on that so guess that wouldnt work either.oh well.thanks anyways guys

not sure where you're located, but have you looked @ the cost of a rebuild?
and, if you re & re it yourself, that's usually good for another $200 to $300 of the cost of having it done completely @ the shop. plus it gives you the satisfaction of saying, "i did that".
if the almighty dollar is an issue (tends to be the problem for alot of us now-a-days) you could try the wreckers for a used one. this, of course, has it's own pitfalls. you never know how the other trans was treated, it'll have a limited warrenty (shorter time frame), and it could end up costing you a rebuild after the wreckers warrenty finishes. that would suck even more than having it rebuilt in the first place, for obvious reasons.
good luck, keep us posted of your success with this.

i always wondered that. what happens if you swap out the 4l60 for something else. my 93s trans has been iffy for a while and i got a th350/np208 on the shelf for when it blows. is the engine gonna run all screwy?

You would want to have the ECU flashed to remove all of the transmission junk and then tape up the connectors to the transmission. It shouldn't cause any engine problems, however I am not sure how an OBD1 ECU would like it if the transmission were to suddenly go missing...
