Default Starter Issue

So to give you a run down of the blazer. I got the blazer back in September for $600.00 It is a 2000 blazer LS with the 4.3 Vortex motor. I was told that it needed a new starter and that was it. Well after having my friend attempt to install the new starter, he told me that the mount where the bold inserts for the start had snapped off in half. To make the long story short I had a welding company weld a mount to the block and the start was installed. This weekend I could get the truck to start. When I turn the key all it would do is click, so I got a new battery. and then noticed that the positive cable to the starter was loose. So I tighten it. NOW when I try to start the truck it kicks over twice and stops but you can hear a spinning noise. I'm able to start the truck if I quickly turn the key but not hold it. I don't know what the issue is now and I'm hoping that its not the starter slipping or not ingaging.
