Default 96 4wd not fully disengaging?

Hi everyone,

Just bought a 96 blazer with 88K on in last weekend. Drove fine for about 1.5 hours on the way home then as I started to slow down it started whirring from the front passenger wheel area. As I came to a stop, at <5mph i could hear a ticking from the same area until I came to a complete stop. As I accelerated it did the same, out of curiousity I pushed the 4x4 button (oh yeah, since i didnt mention it has push button 4x4) it went completely away, pushed the 2hi button and it started up again. I pulled over and stopped. I continued to change it between 4hi and 2hi and could here from both sides something that souned like it was disengagin/engaging from the front end. After a few times of this I took off again and it went away. Today I had the same thing happen again, once again from the front passenger.

Any ideas? hub halfway locking in?

Thanks for any help.

Common problem. You either have a faulty vacuum switch on the transfer case, a partially sticking actuator cable (runs from the actuator under the battery to the front axle), or a problem inside the front differential. By far the most common is a faulty vacuum switch on the transfer case.

A quick search should come up with some good threads for your reading pleasure!
