Default Cylinder head help fast

Put heads on my 01 after finding the others had cracked from PO not having anti freeze. My 01 has roller rockers but could only find the 99 and 98 heads close by and they are the adjustable. Is there any difference other than the rockers on these heads? From what I have dug up the have the same compression ratio. Look identical visually. I took and put a insert in the heads I bought and used the roller rockers. ( I am a machinist). Problem is now the thing won't run. Seems to want to diesel. Fires once in awhile and that's it. starter turns it over slowly and makes a strange noise but if the fuel pump relay is removed it turns over fine. The fuel in it was old but I added new and it ran before changing out the heads. Old fuel taking room in the chamber? Higher compression? Anyone with a idea on what the problem could be? Thanks.

Does the temperature sending unit affect the starting? seems I read where it controls the injectors or something. I noticed while it was on the lift that no wire was going to the unit, struck me as odd but but since we had the right head off perhaps it came unhooked. Was going to mention it but we got into something else and forgot. Checked timing again. He got # 1 on compression and turned the crank until the white mark lined up with the pointer. Then I think he lined the rotor up with # 1 on the cap and dropped in the distributor. Is there something we missed there? Seems to me we are having a timing problem by the dieseling and backfire but he says the timing is good. Did we miss a step? Seems to turn over fine and normal until the fuel pump relay is installed then it cranks hard. Have to put charger on to help. Acts like it wants to run, diesels and occasional backfire. Any idea?
