Question electronic spark control vs. distributor

Hello, I have a couple questions regarding the ESC vs. a distributor..

My blazer died on my the other day while I was driving, and it wouldn't start back up. A buddy of mine threw a computer on It and the ESC code popped up. He also said that it might be better to switch it out with a distributor instead of just replacing the ESC. being new to the DIY mechanics, is this even possible?

also, my engine still won't start. It will turn but the belt does not rotate when trying to start it. Could the ESC be the cause of this?

I've tried to find some info, but I was having trouble figuring out what to search for. Hopefully you all can help!

thanks!

Above statement has me confused? If the engine is actually turning, the belt should be turning too...but im not sure why we are talking about the belt when the distributor or ignition system is the original problem? Could you please be more detailed so we can understand and help?

Also, what year and model are we talking about?...
...yeah im lost?.....

Its an 89 blazer with the 5.7 in it.

While i was driving down the freeway, my engine just cut off. I tried to start it and it turned over but would not start. Once i popped the hood i noticed that the belt would not turn as i tried to start the truck.

With the ESC, my friend plugged in the computer thing for the check engine light (sorry i dont know what its called), and the code for the ESC showed up. I was wondering if that had anything to do with the belt not rotating while I tried to start it.
