Default engine not running right

someone gave me a 1995 4wd 4.3l blazer. it's not running right, it seems to be missing. it smokes alittle and smells like it's running rich. i replaced plugs, wires, cap and rotor button. i tried to use a code reader but i guess it's not obd 2. i just kept getting read error. where do you think i should go from here?

No check engine light? or SES whatever it says on yours.

Where is your ECU located. That can help determine which OBD system you have. Check here.

If it's not OBD1.5 you could use the paperclip method.

You may try cleaning the EGR valve as well.

if you have a full OBDII system you can always go to your local parts store(checkers,o'reilley's,etc.) and they should be able to read your code.
