Flywheel Replacement
Help!!! 97 blazer. Flywheel needs to be replaced. Been quoted $1000 to do it. What do I need to do it myself? Part is only like $35.00. Does anyone have any detailed information for a do it yourself type of person?

RE: Flywheel Replacement
Book calls for the J 23523-F Crankshaft Balancer Remover and Installer or equivalent. I have made several removal and installation tools before by cutting a peice of steel to fit the front of the balancer and drilling holes appropriately for the bolt pattern on the front. Then welding a nut to the center to use with a jack bolt to remove the balancer.
With the proper puller, you will need to remove the upper fan shroud, the fan, the accessory drive belt, the lower fan shroud, then the accessory drive pulley that bolts to the front of the harmonic balancer. Then remove the retaining bolt on the balancer and install the puller. The puller must pull on the center section. A regular pulley puller should not be used. To reinstall the new balancer, use a longer bolt and the original washer. The bolt length will have to be reduced the closer you get to being fully installed as you should not bottom out the bolt. The proper puller/installer has a provision for installation that would not require removal until the balancer is fully seated.
Check with your local autoparts stores to see if they do any form of tool rental and have this tool.
Hope this helps!

Ha! Well now, don't know what I was thinking... But you are right I should have thought flex plate...
The flex plate or flywheel if equiped with a manual transmission is quite a bit more involved. You will atleast have to pull the transmission back a few inches (using long bolts helps keep everything held in place.
This is a much more difficult job to do and if you do not have the tools, the best you can do is try getting quotes from a few different shops.
If you do not mind, what is happening that has you asking this?

Starter sounded like it went out. Upon investigation at least 3 of the teeth are missing.

That'll do it. Yeah, just ignore my first post here. Been working on tractors a bit too much lately while dad has been away.

Then its a Flexplate and this link ought ot help you.
You don't need to drop the tranny out, I used 6" long bolts to replace the tranny belhousing to engine bolts. Disconnected everything except the tranny cooler lines and slide her back as far as possible. You only need 3" or so, enough to get a wrench in there to take the flexplate to crank bolts out. This is not a quick repair. It will take you the better part of a weekend to do, unless you have expierience dropping tranny's. If you have dropped your tranny out before, figure on a 4-6 hour job.
