I'm changing the fluid in my Transfer Case, and have never attempted this before... Can anyone help me locate the plug, and how to check it? Help would be much appreciated!

 

The plugs are on the back of the transfer case. They are a recessed hex plug which will require a rather large allen or torx wrench or equivalent socket to remove. The lower of the two plugs is used to drain the t-case while the upper is used to fill it. The level needs to be up to the bottom of the upper hole.

The plugs prolly take a T55 or 1" wrench to undo, the lower one is the drain, take it out and all the oil pours out....

The one tahts about 1/3 of the way up and is the same type of plug is the fill hole. Fill it up till the fluid flows back out the upper hole, then its good and full.

I like to put a tip on the fluid bottle with a hose - put hose in hole, squeeze bottle to fill. Makes less mess, its tought to get in there to fill it up. Will hold about 2 quarts.

You can buy the expensive blue oil from the dealer, or use ATF, whichever you choose.

If your dash 4wd switch has 4 buttons (auto-4wd), you have the NV236 transfer case and MUST use GM Autotrac 2 fluid from the dealer. Using ATF can cause the clutch for the front output to fail. For the $8 a quart, it is worth the $24 total to use the right stuff (NV236 capacity is 2.3qts so buy 3).

If you have 3 buttons on the dash switch, then you have the NV233 which uses regular ATF.
