If you know which way the distributer turned rotate it back the other direction slightly and you should be able to get it close enough in time to start and adjust for the best idle if you do not have a timing light.

you shouldnt be able to turn the distributor unless it was really loose. Are you SURE you go the plugs on right?

Regardless of firing order or how far off the distributor is, cranking should not be impacted. Becareful when rotating the distributor to get it back to the correct location, a little movement can mean a lot.
Try looking at the base of the distributor where the clamp is, unless your engine is exceptionally clean you will be able to tell where it was.
When you get it correctly timed take a chisel and set it across the distributor base on the engine and on the distributor boss on the block and give it a wack. You now have an alignment mark that is close enough to start any engine even after you pull the distributor, as long as you do not rotate the engine.

I am glad that it was that simple. (Relatively Speaking) You never know when something strange will happen right out of the blue. I had a car that I pulled in my drive way to change the oil and it would not start again. The engine jumped time on me and I had to have a new timing chain installed. (This was a 1973 Duster I had while going to college)
