Default Radiator help?

I was replacing a transmission cooling line on a neighbors 2005 Trailblazer. I removed the 3/8" fitting from the radiator on the lower drivers side because it was damaged. The fitting had a beveled washer attached to it. The local parts stores had only the straight fittings with no beveled washer. I went to put one on and the piece that it threads in to went inside the radiator and coolant came pouring out. I put the old "beveled" fitting back on temporarily and all seems well. I guess my question is: Did I ruin his radiator? I see the purpose of the beveled washer, but is it normal for that piece to be pushed in to the radiator?

Thank you for any insight you can offer.
