Spun bearings, replacing engine, need some knowledge
My 96 Blazer pooped out and I need to replace it. Can anyone tell me the motors I have to choose from? It's a 4X4. The salvage guy said it had to be a 96 - 98 for it to fit. Anything else I need to check?

he pretty much has it, knock sensors can be drilled and tapped if you find a good deal on a 98+ engine, some time (not sure when, I mentioned in a previous post) they switched to metric bellhousing and oil pan bolts.
If the oil pan is from a 2wd or is different then yours you will likely need to replace it and the oil pick up.
2001+ have roller rockers
2wd can be used if you replace pan/oil pickup and remote oil filter bracket.
I put 96 2wd engine in my 2001 and had to use all the sensors off my engine and get sae bolts for the engine to tranny and use the metric bolts for oil pan to tranny, had to swap oil pans and pickup.
check your motor mounts closely, both mine were broken, excellent time to buy new ones.

Thanks, I found a 97 wrecked S10 at a salvage yard that got broad sided. I didn't get if it was 2 or 4wd though. If all I need to do in that case is switch oil pans and pick-ups I should be good. I never had anything just let go without any warning like this one did. Was going down the road, clicked the resume on the speed control and it just croaked. No violent noises or even subtle ones - just silence at 150,000. I got it restarted and it sounded like an old Cummins diesel. The heat gauge read hot when I got it going but not before it died. My best guess is the oil pump went out at 70 mph. It probably didn't even have time to register. If it's 97 do I still have to switch bolts and oil filter or are they the same?
