Angry Spider Gear Shot Through Housing

I have a 91 s10 with 4.3L v6 I was going to a new fishing hole today and kind of got my front tires in a bind I had it in 4 hi so I switched to 4 low gave it hell and next thing I know I had a spider gear laying on the ground and gear oil pouring out it shot through the housing! A friend said I would need to replace the whole axle and I am kind of broke right now what would be the safest and most permanent way to fix it? I will post some pictures tomorrow.

........wow is all I can say, with the amount of force that seemed to be present you probably destroyed all your bearings with stress, and the case could have small stress cracks. IMO find the nearest junkyard find a donar axle. Make sure they are the same gear ratio. There is a sticker in your glove box that will give you a list of parts that are in your vehicle.

How much do axles from a junkyard usually go for?

Oh and is it safe to drive?
