Default Transmission dipstick isn't accurate?

Hey all, so I've got a 98 Blazer that I'm having trouble with when trying to read the level of my transmission. I checked it this morning when it was cold and it was well over the hot line. I drove it, went through all gears, let it idle on level surface and when I go out to check, I'm reading almost bone dry. It's under the cold line while it's running. I've been having some problems while driving which is why I've been checking it. When I'm driving at about 40-50mph and it's about to shift into 3rd/4th gear, it'll hesitate and then jump into it. What's my problem here? It's an old vehicle with well over 217k miles. I added a bit of fluid just to see if it would help a bit and it did seem to help it shift from park to reverse and vice versa.

The cold line is only a guestimate when filling the tranny back up after a fluid/filter change. You always want to check when the tranny is up to temp, just like you did and were almost bone dry.

You need to add fluid when it is running and up to temp to the correct level on the dip stick.

What if it seems to read over filled all the time. Cold above hot crossthatches, hot well past cross thatches?

Check it hot with engine idling and level surface. Also look at both sides of the stick and you will find one side may be lower than the other. Always fill from the low side to bring it up to the proper level.

Sounds like he has been checking it with the engine stopped.
