Will any 4L60E from a 4x4 Blazer/S10 work?
So one of my transmission lines wore a hole against the exhaust pipe and thus lost fluid while on highway, then of course the 3-4 clutch pack is now worn out, as I can only drive in 1-2 gears. So I have found a few low mileage or rebuilt 4x4 4L60E's locally that are from earlier year Blazers, will any one of these work in my 2001 Blazer? This is my daily driver/kid hauler so I need to get it fixed ASAP!
Also, how hard is it to replace the transmission in one of these? I can do my T56 TransAm in about 2-3 hours, but of course, there is no transfer case, etc. and I've never really replaced an auto before.

a 4l60e is a 4l60e I beleave they are all the same the 4l60 is a new 700r4 the 4l60e is just elec. they all should bolt up.

Any 97+ two piece case 4L60E from a 4wd vehicle should bolt right in with no problems. I would not recommending going with an older model year transmission though as enhancements were made all along the way.

It will be heavier than your TransAm and larger. Transmission lines need to be dealt with and fluid will make a good mess in your shop.
Much more care must be taken to keep from getting dirt or contamination in the lines, TC or front pump. On your T56 that's not a issue.
When you pull your fried 4L60, you can get the drive shafts, linkages and transfer case out of the way, unbolt the bell housing pull the tranny off leaving the old torque converter on the ring gear. This more than likely will damage the front seal, but you don't care. Going back together is a different deal. The auto has no pilot shaft centering issue like the standard tranny does, but you must deal with the TC. The TC needs to be carefully installed in the front pump before you stab it. Then, as you move the tranny around and slide under the car, be careful it does not slide out and trash the front seal. Lift the tranny in place, bolt the bell housing, the carefully bolt the TC to the ring gear/flex plate. Turn the engine little by little to access all the bolts.
Other than those points, it's not that much different than your TransAm

if you dont have a tranny jack remove the t case first the tranny and tc. is 150lb with the t case its like 200lb

I have a trans jack, which is the easiest, to remove trans+transfer case together or to remove them separately?
#7
if you have the room and your tranny jack will hold the 200lb leave them to gather make shour your tranny jack strap is good

I seldom have the opportunity, but my favorite way to "stab" is Engine, Tranny, Trasfer all bolted together, then set on the frame in one piece, then set body on all. It's wonderful to hook up exhaust, wiring and fuel lines standing up right! Almost makes a "Frame-Off" or "Body Lift" worth while.

Sorry to thread jack, but I'm considering a trans swap on my '95 4x4 (4L60). What years should i be searching for at the junk yard? Are the 97+ that much different from earlier years that i can't/shouldn't use one?
