Default few questions about air cleaner

Hi Guys,

I'm looking to purchase an air filter for my blazer 90' (TBI), however the task is difficult than i would imagine.

1. first of all I'm not sure which base i need - dropped, raised, off-set or flat. all i want is to buy a one that fits and won't cause clearance problems.

2. i'm trying to keep in mind that i do offroad with the truck so it's important for me to buy a high quality filter. i heard good things about k&n, can anyone confirm based on personal experience?

3. i have some concerns about the fitment, first i see bases that fits a 5-1/8 single 2 barrel, single 4 barrel etc... i understand this measurements refer to carbs, so how can i be sure it will fit my TBI?

the second concern about the fitment is the height, i would like to purchase a 5" tall filter, can anyone please confirm it will fit? or should i just go with a 3"?

in addition, any recommended chrome sets / kits that will fit all the above would be highly appreciated

thanks in advance, yarin.

I have a 10 inch chrome eldebrock on mine. It fit the factory replacement k&n I already had. Mine is 2 inches tall. I know with my body lift I could fit way taller but on a factory truck I would check, honestly I don't think the room is there for a 5 inch cleaner. Easiest way to check is to get some playdoh. Make a tower and sit it on your breather, close the hood. The hood will squash it down and after measuring you can find out what room ya got.

I don't think any drop bases will fit a s-series but our tbi have standard 4 barrel carb top so any breather with that opening fits.

Plenty of room under the hood of a K5:

Be safe and use a flat bottom plate.
Get out your tape measure and see how much room you have.

3" IMHO is plenty of air cleaner.

Yeah gotta start looking at sections. Used to people calling them k5 or tahoe. We only call the mini ones blazers.

In my old k5 I actually stacked 2 paper filters and drove it like that so yeah plenty of room on it.

there's no mix up here, right guys? were talking about k5
the cleaner in the pic is 5" or 3"?

i looked at this 5" filter 60-1270 - K&N Custom Assemblies, Custom Assembly direct from K&N
and this 3" 63-1007-1 - K&N 63 Series Aircharger Kits, Performance Intake Kit direct from K&N

3"

You're options are very expensive. Try Summit racing. The exact same filter element which is what you want is only $53.95.

Air cleaner tops and bottoms are very simple.

Buy this bottom for $14.95:
Billet Specialties Flat Air Cleaner Bases RP1508 - SummitRacing.com

Then choose whatever 14" lid you want. They will all work.

ok i decided to go with JEGS base and top:

JEGS Performance Products 50033 JEGS Performance Chrome Air Cleaners

JEGS Performance Products 50035 JEGS Performance Chrome Air Cleaners

and a k&n 5" filter

K&N E-3760 K&N X-Stream Air Flow Filter Assemblies, Tops and Elements

now the only thing left is a long enough stud kit for my TBI, which has a little offset, not straight... couldn't find one that I'm positive that will fit, any help would be appreciated ...
i saw this one: http://www.jegs.com/i/Spectre/865/4215/10002/-1 but i have a feeling it won't fit, doesn't seem long enough...

I'd weld a piece of all thread on top of the stud you have now then cut it to fit.

If nothing else get a deep nut that fits the stud and cut a piece of allthread to fit that. Loctite the stud, allthread, and deep nut so it won't come apart when ya take the wing nut off the breather.
