Are there any 12 bolt rear axles that would be a direct bolt in for my 10 bolt? I think I stripped the ring gear tonight. Came home on the flat bed.

If so what vehicles did they come in? Will be going to the local pick your own yard monday. thank you all for your knowledge. and it is the 4x4.

 

why do you want a 12 bolt, if your going to swap axles go with a 14bff, cheep and very strong, depending on what it comes out of you may have to re-locate the spring perches. and you will need and conversion u-joint.

but it you want a dirrect swap any half ton truck will work

Well ended up going to the junk yard on saturday. Only found 1 14bff unfortunately it was the wrong gear ratio. So ended up with another 10 bolt for the time being. I needed something that was the fastest and easiest to swap. Had to do the swap by myself in below freezing temps.

The carrier failed at the ring gear bearing.

 

Yeah, that ring gear is all used up!

I'd still recommend picking up the 14BFF if you can swing it financially. Used gears can be found cheap online. I bought a set of 3.73's for both a D44 & a 14BFF for a total of $60 delivered and they look great. I also bought a used 4.10 set for my D44 to match what's currently in my 14BFF for $35 delivered. I did a dye penetrant test on all of the gears with no cracks showing up and wear was pretty much non-existent. You find a lot of perfectly good, used sets out there as people upgrade tire size & gear ratios.

 

Will have to hope this one holds till spring when it warms up and i have the time and money to spare...

 

i never got the whole 12bolt craze. they are basically as strong as a 10 bolt but way rarer so shafts are hard to find if needed.

 

The 12bolt craze came from the muscle cars. I never really understood it when it came to 4wd trucks either. I stuffed my 14BFF in the weeds a VERY long time ago, long before I knew what I would use it for!

 

Another option is the semi-float 14 bolt. It was put under some extended cab 1/2 tons and other trucks and is 6 lug. Should bolt in and is a very strong axle for being semi-float.

 

There's 8 lug 14b SF too... That's what's in my suburbans... They are, I'm told, about as strong as a Dana 60... Full float 14b is more Dana 70 territory...
