Question

so if you pour gas down the throttle or carb and it runs how can the distributor be bad?

You are right. They didn't start doing the cam/crank thing until the Vortec setup I believe 1996+.

The first generation had HEI then went to ICM module with external coil. The ICM module was probably corroded, I just replaced the one I had. He probably should have just changed that but the who distributor most likely was not the much.

@Parasite ......there IS a pickup in the distributor that sends a signal to the ecm that tells it to pulse the injectors...it performs the same function ad the cam shaft sensors that was used in later model vehicles ...

@Parasite ....There is a pick up inside the distributor what does the same job as the camshaft sensor......Sends signal to the ECM which sends a signal to pulse the injectors...
