clicking noise on the highway 4x4

i have a 97 s 10 blazer and when driving around on back roads its fine but as soon as i get on the highway with the truck it tries to engage into 4wheel drive on its own any ideas

What symptom leads to the conclusion that it is trying to engage 4X4?

Front end binding?
Front differential noise?
