Default ignition switch

i have a 2002 jimmy with an ignition problem, starts no problem, but when i go to shut it off sometimes it shuts off and you take the key out and other times like right now the key wont turn back far enough to take the key out. you have to unhook the battery so it wont drain. what i was wondering is, is it just the switch or is there a rely or something i should look for as well ?

Sounds more like a problem with the ignition cylinder than the ignition switch. If you play with the shifter, does it allow you to turn the key back more and remove it?

I would try some powdered graphite into the lock once you get the key out and then work it a lot to get the graphite down into the lock cylinder.
