i'm going to get my decoder ring:

i'm new. Planning to rebuild a 4.3. I found one with 200k miles, and that seems like a lot. Is it too many miles to make rebuilding worth my time/$.

my Answer: yes. a motor with 200k miles (as common as the 4.3 is) is too many to make rebuilding worth while. I got a stock 4.3 with less than 85k miles on it INSTALLED and with a 1 year warranty for $1800. If you shop craigslist (for a motor still hooked up so you can see it run smoothly AND see the mileage) you should be able to get a fine candidate with 120k miles or less for a grand +/- a few hundred bones. Thats like geting a younger divorced girlfriend. a bit used, but still plenty of tread left to have some fun with OR spend the cash and just get a 3 yr/ Unlimited abuse already rebuilt engine....

Actually I think he's saying he has a blazer with the 4.3 and 200k miles and he's wondering if he should rebuild the engine or just wait till it goes.
I would say if it runs good then what more can you ask? If it's gone to 200k then it wasn't among the rare lemon/monday built 4.3's so it's still got alot of life left in it. If it's not broke dont fix it.

@thestig: AHHH. if thats the case (i have 200k 4.3, should I rebuild) then i agree with you. keep running it until it melts down. not reason to screw with it. might upset the little shavings of piston head that are keeping it all together at this point
if it ain't broke, dont break it

My 93 tahoe blazer, had 318,000 on it when she calved on me in a parking lot, until then we were together from the west ,where i bought it,to the east,it,s not worth rebuilding ,but i miss her and am useing her for a parts dept.already saved me a bundle in parts, her frame is solid as a rock and better than my current 95 blazer, which i,am rebuilding now.the moral of the story is drive it till it crocks and just hope it is,nt in a parking lot or worse yet,on the free way ! Cheers jim
