Default Initial Jimmy Questions

Hi All,

Just got an 05 Jimmy, and know absolutely nothing about the GMC stuff. Used to be a Jeep guy, but like the option of a wagon on a frame which the Cherokee is not.

Curious about a few things. Will be slowly building it up a bit. No plans for SAS, or to go as nuts as I did with my last jeep. Just something that will work in moderate off road situations.

I also have no idea about my rear axle. How strong is it? What's the factory gearing? What size tires can I run on stock driveline without worrying about blowing my axle shafts? Can I trust this electronic T-Case selector? What breaks the most on outings (with the jeeps it's U-Joints)? How bad is this IFS system off road (I'm not getting into a SAS on this)?

Cheers,

Russ

Welcome. Snap a pic of RPO (Regular Production Order) codes on the sticker in the glove box and look them up. Those will tell you what options it came with from the factory.

Were there different axle options? I didn't think there were since 2005 or 2006 was the last year for these things.

A 7.625" gm 10 bolt was standard with 4 different gear ratios. 8.625" was possibly an optional depending on the model. It's harder to get details on an 05 jimmy.

7.6" doesn't sound like much of an axle. I'm guessing with the stock driveline, that nobody really runs anything more than a 31" tire? I was hoping to get 33's under it at minimum, but I'm assuming that the axle is too weak, and that for 33's I'm looking at a re-gear?

You will have to look up the RPO , my last 05 Jimmy was an 8.6" with 342 , my buddies 05 Jimmy is 8.6 with 373 ....His truck is not a Zr2 , just ordered with the bigger rear end with lower gears.....possibly because of the tow ready package.....you can tell visually if it is a 7.6 or 8.6....google for pictures.
