Default Strange fuel gage readings/sending unit?

For the past month or so my fuel gage has been doing some strange things and it seems to be getting worse. It seems that once my fuel level drops below 1/2 tank the gage hangs at 1/2 suspicously for a while and then drops to 1/4 or below without any real notice. I'm pretty convinced that its a sending unit problem but I feel its just sticking a little.

Is there a good fuel additive out there that would work to clean up the sending unit and throw a little lube on it without screwing up the FI?

Looking for ideas before dropping the tank.

I have the same year truck you have......with 115,000 miles on it.....my sending unit is pretty much unreliable....as far as I know you are just going to have to replace it.....I have been going on 4 months now..just keeping track of how many miles have have gone..versus...gallons.....not too bad..I have only run out of gas once...I am sure someone on here would be able to tell you exactly how to do it......I am adding it to the shocks...tune up...door hinge....list.....good luck!

Save your money. the only cure is replacement. Replacement isn't cheap. $260-$350 for parts alone. On the newer body styles the fuel pump and fuel pressure gauge is one assemble.

I have the same thing, I know it is the sending unit, it is either bad or it has the 25gal sender rather than the 31gal it needs.

A few mistakes that I have seen done.

#1 Don't buy a junkyard or el-cheapo sending unit.

#2 Take your time installing the new unit even the slightest ooops will give you the headache again.

Lastly this goes overlooked most of the time, check the wiring for corosion, breaks ect. I would go as far as to trace the wire as far as possible. I have seen wire corosion that has "climbed" back through the jacket and separated causing intermittent contact. A little PM will save you some big headaches.
