Default 1991 S-10 Blazer Turn Signal Lever, Wiper Problems

The lever on the left side of the steering wheel recently broke in my car. The end of the lever was spinning freely so I bought a replacement. I put the new lever in and now the windshield wipers are on constantly at the maximum speed. Could I have put the new lever in incorrectly? The old lever would click through the wiper speeds and smoothly adjust through the intermittent range. The new lever turns but no response from the wipers and no clicks like before. Thanks for the help!
