I don't off-road but I carry a come-along, a 20 foot tow strap, and a 20 foot tow rope with steel hooks at each end in the back of my jimmy. I've never needed it for myself (because it's there) but I've surprised myself with the stuck people I've managed to pull out of the ditch on icy roads. The only exception was a drunk guy I wasn't willing to put back on the road. It's not a real winch, but it fit's the "not much money" perfectly.

My buddy has the synergy off road winch plate setup, but also has a 2" BL. I also have a 2" BL, and made a plate to mount in between the frame. Hopefully I'll get my winch installed over the next few days.

You have to get a winch mount plate first that attaches to your frame in the front of your truck

Front and rear receiver hitchs,........fashion your winch plate with a slide-in and you can use it on either end....just don't buy a winch over a hundred pounds ;-)

You should be able to make a plate similar to that one for a fraction of the cost.
