I can't remember what the gear ratio is but if you go to a junk yard and match the production codes in the glove box then you should be fine. I took one out of a jimmy or some such thing for my blazer. only difference was that the replacement had wires for abs and the old one didn't, just pulled the wires and everything was hunky dory!
a 4x4 and 2wd won't interchange. On a 98 you can put any gear you want in it but you will have to have a programmer to calibrate the speedo. If your 4x4 you also need to have the front match the rear ratios.
GU2 2:73 ratio
GU4 3: 08 ratio
GU5 3:23 ratio
GU6 3:42 ratio
GT4 3:73 ratio
GT5 4:10 ratio
GQ1 Open Differential Rear Axle
G80 Positraction/Locking Rear Axle

well i think i should be fine, his code was a gu6.he did not say why it wouldnt work,he just said a guy at the junk yard said it wont.his is a 1996 4x4.i cant really think of a reason it wont work..
i know mine has disk brakes.not really sure on the other one.but i'm saving about 300(local junk yards wants 400+ for them)so if i have to down grade then i will ya know.i wonder how hard it is to (if possible)to swap the drums for disks?
ok i picked up a gu6 out of a 1995,the only differnce is the drum brakes.i am gunna just swap them for my disks off the other rearend..looks easy enuff!
