Default Baffling issue

Hey everyone
I just found your site and registered to hopefully discover what my problem is. I did belong to another S-10 site (S-10PLANET) but it seems to have gone into the internet wasteland.

So here is my issue with my 97 4dr Blazer in a nutshell; Only when I am in 2wd I get a sound that sounds like a bad bearing when driving down the road. It appears at about 20KPH.
When I switch to 4WD HI the sound disappears. Please note that I have to do that switch when stationary, if I do it on the fly it sounds like the transfer case isn't engaging and makes a whining sound.

I know it's not the hubs as I replaced the drivers side 2 years ago and just replaced the passenger side CV axle and Hub the other day.

After doing some reading and watching YouTube vids I am thinking the problem originates from either the actuator (under the battery) or transfer case vacuum switch not working properly.

I don't drive it much and when I do it's only around town and rarely over 60 kph so I keep it in 4high.
It's about to turn 260,000 kms and I know it's almost a 20yo vehicle but it's all I have right now.

I am hoping it's only a minor repair and not a major one.

Any ideas to what else it could be?
I am asking because I have back issues and I really don't want to be grasping at straws so to speak. The work I did on it last week laid me up all weekend.

Just want to thank everyone for your outstanding help in fixing my problem. It's reassuring to know that there are place's on the web like this that one can turn to and so many eagerly waiting to help out.
I look forward to helping out where and when I can in the same manner you all have helped me.
Thank you one and all.

You're welcome. I'm glad to hear that after you read the rules of the forum and the 100's of threads for diagnosing 4x4 noisy in 2wd you found one that helped you out. Happy motoring.

You hit it on the head Rusty!! I haven't posted in months as it seems most people lately are too lazy to look for the answer, or it sounds like they just have no clue and shouldn't be using tools...

OP, I will throw you a bone...
