Default Looseness in lower column

Hi, has anyone had any experience with changing the lower steering column bearing? Mine has the tilt column if it's any different?
I have noticed the odd clunk when turning & always assumed that a steering linkage joint was going out somewhere. However, I have checked them all & none have any play in them at all. Just as I was about to give up I Grabbed the steering shaft (between the firewall & steering gear) and I can rattle it up & down. I am assuming that there's some kind of bearing down the bottom somewhere near the firewall? If I grab the sterring wheel & try to move it up & down I can feel no play so the problem is definitely at the bottom of the column somewhere?
Mine is right hand drive with a floor mounted shifter but I can't imagine there's any reason for it to be any different than a left hand drive model?
Any advice would be appreciated.
